Growing metropolis seeks partner with a love of the arts and a desire to build a Broadway-style theater.

That is Salt Lake City's personal ad, as the city works to move forward with a 2,500-seat theater as the center of an arts and cultural district in the capital's downtown.

"This is an opportunity to get out there and find what interest there is in the project," said Councilman Eric Jergensen, as the city put out a "request for qualifications" from developers this week. "We need to find a partner to help us develop that area into a center of vibrancy."...

Despite my support of the Proscenium, I do now think that it will be a wiser choice to put the theater down town - Proscenium should find another center piece to the project. Of course, it would need to change it's name seeing as "Proscenium" is a type of theater. But I think that Sandy can find something else and still build some sort of tower - hopefully more in the 16-24 story range rather than 40. As far as the Salt Lake theater goes, I wish them the best

I have no doubt that both Sandy and Thanksgiving Point will have a theatre in the future. Whether it's five years from now or ten or fifteen, will remain to be seen. If it's in the next five years, then the first Sandy theatre developed at the South Towne area will probably be more on the scale of a Hale theatre.

Big article in The Enterprise this week about the remodel of the old library downtown into the new store for OC Tanner. They mentioned that they have restored a lot of the old wood-work and have taken off the addition and the planetarium dome. The dome was donated to a planetarium in Orderville, it said. They also mentioned that the project is 100% over budget. It will end up costing around $23 million dollars. However, OC Tanner reassured that their business is doing well. There sales are only off 20-25% compared to their competitors being off as much as 50%. They also said that the market is still there, but people are more discreet when they buy more expesive diamonds and jewelry. They mentioned that they just sold a diamond for $100,000 a couple of weeks ago.

I like your idea. There are just a few things I would consider changing. I would continue the street grid N to S along 300 W, 300 W is such a critical corridor for the city, it could really disrupt traffic in and out of the city and the development.

As for the 500 S and 600 S traffic diversion, I agree that there is a big dilema on how to get traffic onto 550 S. I don't necessarily think you would want to encourage the majority of the traffic coming off and on the freeway to come right through the center of this development. Having anything more than two lanes in each direction on 550 S would negate the pedestrian aspects of the area. I was going to suggest the trax circulator come from Central Station down 550 S and then connect at Main and 400 S, but after I thought about it, it would deter the ability for the street to be closed off for festivals and such, this would also be a problem if 3 lanes of traffic in each direction came through here.

I think one or two lanes of traffic on this street would suffice, if the area was designed to be a vibrant residential, retail and commercial core that wouldn't have to rely on auto traffic. I think 500 and 600 S need to remain 3 or 4 lanes to accommodate the continually increasing traffic demands into and out of the city.

Maybe the solution is to transform 500 s and 600 S into grand entrances and exist and to open up the concept a little more to encompass or somehow include those two streets as well.

Again just my thoughts. If I can conjure up some ideas I will draw my version of the map to encompass 500 and 600 S. If that is ok of course?

I also agree that the theater should be downtown. I still like the rest of the Proscenium idea with the mix-use and the towers.
I would like to see more taller buildings in Sandy. ( Taller then just 6-stories )

yeah, I think Sandy is becoming a cool area it's just that downtown is the center of our metro so more people will have access to the theater if it's in our CBD. you have trax running all over the valley, front runner heading north to ogden and soon south to provo.

Trolley Lofts and Office Suites

Hey gang. I have an update for the Huntington Park project. I just got word the developers are going to try to convert the existing Medical Association building rather than tearing it down and call it Trolley Lofts and Office Suites.

I think its an improvement, though I did like the old design.

The problem I see with Sandy is that, where they'd like to build a viable downtown core, the roads aren't very organized. They'd have to waste the money straightening them all out. The other thing is, they've sort of already started with the Jordan Common Tower, Rio Tinto Stadium and this new one coming in. Yet, they'd rather not build upon that and instead start something new by the city hall.

Compare this to the grid structure of downtown:

Couple of inches of snow here in Bountiful. I'm sure there is more than that if you go higher up the bench here.

I really like that entry way to the new LDS Church History Library.

Me too T-Mac, It's an elegant engagement of that corner. Sure beats the old parking lot that was there before.

I do like the entrance to the library shown above. I say any new building that engages the pedestrian in any degree is better than a surface lot.

Here's to eliminating 50% of our large surface lots in the next 10-15 years.

Have any of you guys seen the inside of the new LDS Church History Library? I was watching KSL last night and they show the lobby area and it kind of looks like we went back in time. The lobby kind of looks like the 70's with the brown and the lights. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I really like the lights. The big thing in chic design right now is allot of retro. One color I find amusing is orange. I don't know... I'm sure not going to change my love of the burgundys and deep greens for some orange that probably will only last a couple of seasons. Ehh, whatever floats your boat.

I like the lights, the rest doesn't look too good in those pictures. I imagine it's a lot better looking in person.
