I'm thinking this is being done specifically for the World Cup.

Seems like they originally were planning on a 13 storey building back in 2020.

Quote:
The building itself will consist of two underground levels, 3 levels of community space on the ground floor and 13 levels of residential housing: a mix of bachelor, one bedroom and two bedroom units.

There are still a number of things to confirm, including a rezoning application, a pre-application open house and applications for funding, as well as local, municipal and federal grants and partnership opportunities for the community space. It will be an exciting project that will not only allow Bloom to own and manage more housing units, but continue to grow our own internal capacity to deliver more projects of all types in the future, and continue to strengthen our current portfolio and infrastructure.

For this project, The Bloom Group was supported by Vancity Community Foundation and the services of HDR Architecture and Catalyst Community Developments. We are thankful for their support.

After LA it might be wise to build a bunch of fire breaks...

Deterioration of trees in Stanley Park ‘progressing much faster than anticipated’

A staff report that goes before commissioners Jan. 20 said “weather events” in October and November 2024 resulted in “tree failures.” That triggered urban forestry staff to get an independent assessment of the impacted areas of the park.

“There is clear evidence that dead trees resulting from the hemlock looper moth outbreak are rapidly deteriorating and many are becoming structurally unstable and demonstrated that the deterioration of dead trees is progressing much faster than anticipated, outpacing the phased plan for risk mitigation and restoration,” the report said.
Quote:
B. A. Blackwell & Associates Ltd. was contracted by the park board in 2024 for Phase 2 of the tree removal plan and to deliver “critical operational treatment works for trees impacted by the hemlock looper moth in Stanley Park.”

“The current Phase 2 budget covered work up to early January 2025, however the work window that respects bird nesting season extends until into March,” the report said.

“There is the plan to issue another [request for proposals] for Phase 3 in 2025 to continue the treatment work, but the timing of this procurement process will not allow to continue working immediately on the emerging priority risk mitigation areas.”

The $3 million was awarded to start using some of the budget for Phase 3 under the current contract with B. A. Blackwell & Associates Ltd. “to expedite additional high-priority mitigation work,” the report said.

The report said the risk of not advancing additional high-priority mitigation work in the first quarter of 2025 would mean longer term closures of forest areas and potential closures of adjacent roadways including Stanley Park Drive and North Lagoon Drive.

I caught a livestream with some of the demo. Here's a frame grab from a few minutes ago.

It's a 3 hour YouTube video now and you can see the demolition from about 1:46 to 1:51.

It might turn into a skating rink overnight if they have to keep spraying.

They knew what they were doing.
You cannot tell me otherwise that they did not deliberately let the building get to that point, just to eat the demolition costs and build something more revenue generating.

I mean it looks pretty solid to me..

They are just demolishing it and said the actual removal of the material will take months.

Given their history with Little Mountain, it's more likely they'll keep sitting on it.

Traffic Cam just went back online this evening.
Looks like the demolition is done. They will be working through the night to get some streets reopen for the morning.

I found some details about this project this last week but it got announced before someone could publish a story about it

Sunborn/PavCo met with councillors back in 2023.

Pretty much confirms my "permanent" reference in my old post. They are in planning stages to have a ship builder in Spain to do their future ships (New York, new ship in London etc). 2027 opening date.

New low carbon floating hotel and visitor destination proposed for Vancouver waterfront

A new 250-room floating hotel is being proposed for Vancouver by Finnish hotel developer, Sunborn International Holding (SBIH). In partnership with the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre (VHFC), the hotel will be a unique, world-class hospitality venue, bringing new jobs, economic growth, and creating a new destination on the water.

"The new floating hotel will be a jewel for the crown of Vancouver's waterfront," says Graham Clarke, Chairman of VHFC. "The new property will contribute to the urgent need for hotel rooms in Vancouver in an innovative and effective way, with no permanent footprint or environmental ramifications, adding new public spaces, viewpoints, cafés and restaurants to Vancouver's vibrant waterfront."

The proposal would create 250 new hotel rooms, without taking scarce real estate away from other important local priorities in the city landscape. If approved, Sunborn Vancouver will be built off-site eliminating any disruptive impact and will be an environmentally friendly development, sourcing its power needs from renewable energy. The hotel's renewable energy systems are expected to reduce its power consumption by 60-70%.

With plans to directly connect to the Vancouver Convention Centre's existing infrastructure, the new low carbon floating hotel will operate like a normal building on land, with no discharge to the water. Sunborn Vancouver will also not use fossil fuels and creates no emissions from engines or generators.

"We are excited about the opportunity to bring our new generation of low carbon floating hotels to the Vancouver waterfront," says Hans Niemi, CEO of Sunborn International. "The vessel will be newly built for Vancouver and our intention is to develop a beautiful on-the-water hotel, blending seamlessly and adding new spaces for the public to enjoy."

The floating hotel, its amenities and associated services, are anticipated to create more than 200 direct new jobs and is a fully privately funded development project. Sunborn International and its partners are undergoing a rezoning process with the City of Vancouver, and pending approval, the new hotel is scheduled to open in 2027.

I wonder how big of a problem they'll have with birds droppings.

Other renderings here:

I was curious where they were going to place the ship but I don't know it's going to ruin it for any retail down on that corner. I know it's too tight with the other cruise ships but the area on the east side of the convention centre is at least elevated so it wouldn't have as much of a shadowing effect on the seawall.

I guess it'll also be a functional ship?
Otherwise, why the standard ship design?

Based on the provided renders and press release I would assume no.

There is no bridge or life saving equipment pictured, nor room for either.

The basic ship design, with a somewhat pointy bow, is for seakeeping while being towed. Likely also for the novelty factor.

The original one they had in London had no engine.

They transport them on one of those submersible transport ships and just tow it into place I think.

Honestly sticking it in front of the Westin Bayshore would be better.

I found the Gibraltar planning document and their new ship will have engines.

They'll have lifesaving appliances (life vests I assume) for 210 people. Life boats for 202 people.
