On the plus side, I do think that the renderings they have done to date are probably preliminary. So, hopefully, they will come up with something better.
The reason I didn't snap a picture is they didn't put the full building rendering up for long. Instead, most of the discussion centered around the treatment of the parking structure which will make up the lower floors. On the north and south sides, the parking structure will be 100% concrete with no openings. The committee was concerned about how that might negatively impact the neighboring Atlanta Women's Club and the Opera patio. They asked that the developer consider some aesthetic improvements to the north side. They were less concerned about the south side because it abuts another parking deck.
There was a lot of discussion around the Crescent frontage (west side). Because Crescent is a small street, the parking structure will be what most people are able to see. The discussion indicated that at the last DRC meeting it was all concrete with some air holes. They came back with a new design. In my humble opinion it was hideous. They claimed it was some sort of weaving pattern which would be made from stucco, but basically, it is just like the "redesign" of the Skyhouse South parking deck. Minor enhancements are made, but ugly is ugly.
If they are doing a 50-story tower, they should take a page from the Perkins + Will partnership with Ned Kahn. Or even copy one of the Miami decks that look super green because huge plants are growing out of them. It seems to me there are some relatively inexpensive things (in the scheme of a $70M+ project) that can be done to make a deck look good with creative designers. These architects seemed to lack creativity.
