Yeah, that conversation was really bizarre. Let's leave it there.

Think you're conflating Jeanette Ashe with Terry Yung. But I guess that helped too.

What? No that's my point. They ran Yung (cop, not liked by NDP faithful). Ashe "dropped out" but complained about the process. ABC removing the OPS helped. We know people confuse which level of government is doing what. They certainly blame the NDP for street drug use.

Ashe being the wife of Kennedy Stewart is the icing on the cake.

Then I'm confused. Terry's married to Christine Boyle (the OneCity councillor, now an MLA)... and not being popular with the Dippers would make it harder for him to get elected. Ditto involvement of ABC, which leans further right.

Married to Sarah Kirby-Yung. While maybe hardcore East Van NDP voters might not like the police, I can't think of a reason why downtown voters / centrists would be opposed to it. Not to mention many people don't know their reps background or name.

Yes Terry Yung is married to a current ABC councilor.

The large Left base of the NDP was not super happy with Yung as their nominee. They also weren't happy that Eby walked back other left wing policies like drug decrim, and that he's open to mandatory incarceration, etc.

I'm not saying these are winning strategies, they aren't. But the NDP has upset some of their base, that's all. The NDP is moving to the center because they want to win.

I agree that some of the more left-leaning segment of the NDP base did not like this move. As a life-long NDP voter, I thought it was a great move.

Christine Boyle's partner is Seth Klein, author and activist, and Naomi Klein's brother.

Been a bit out of the loop in provincial politics since the Campbell years, which I consider as kind of a golden age for BC, so colour me surprised by the former premier's endorsement of the climate denier. Talk about shitting all over his own legacy. And Kevin Falcon... like, what happened to these people? Dark money?? It's like when you see an actor you once admire on an ad for car insurance, and assume they must be trying to finance a drug addiction

There's a growing conspiracy theory going around social media that the NDP is stealing the election via mail-in-ballots.

It does raise some concern with the potential fallout once the final results come out. If the NDP see any sizeable increase than you are likely going to see some of these fringe lunatic conspiracy followers mobilize.

I do think the higher than estimated mail in ballots favour the conservatives this time around.

The same NDP that is already ahead without any mail-in ballots? Fucking clown conspiracy idiots. Some new garbage every week.

I think it should come down to having the police focus. The easiest thing for them to do is round up people consuming drugs. They are easy to spot, catch and prove. But they are low impact. I would rather see them go after the people who run the drug industry or are taking advantage of those addicted.
The Provincial government is guilty because by creating a system of open injection and free-drug provision, among other liberal drug-use policies, they normalize drug use and encourage new generations of people including youths into this, thus causing more social problems down the line. By increasing social problems, they justify the use of the mass increases of public funds into tackling crime and healthcare, and thus benefitting their base: the worker's unions. Thus, they are creating a welfare state without benefitting society as a whole. The decline of North America can largely be attributed to this.

As per your point I would rather see them go after the people who run the drug industry or are taking advantage of those addicted:
Destroy the customer base so the dealers won't find it profitable anymore. Agree that the crime syndicates need to be eradicated too. They are essentially murderers who destroy the lives of countless individuals and their loved ones.

It is an interesting case study in right wing paranoia and conspiracy thinking in a few ways:

1) Irrelevance of motive:

As the result stands, the NDP has won. So any delay in the counting of results, or additions to the number of ballots still to be counted is likely to work to the benefit of the Conservatives. But nonetheless, on social media you will see right wing folks automatically assuming that any delay or change means that the election is being rigged against them, to find more (unneeded) votes for the NDP

2) Irrelevance of available information

It was known ahead of time how the votes would be counted, and the process and timeframes involved, and nothing that has happened so far has varied in any way from what was expected ahead of time and what is clearly documented by Elections BC. But this information has no impact on the belief that the election has been rigged.

3) Irrelevance of observers

The Conservative party has people observing every step of the process and hasn't raised any issues or concerns, but this doesn't affect the assumption of rigging by conspiracy theorists.

4) Asymmetric (right wing leaning) nature of the reaction

Elections BC is a non-partisan agency, and the results were very even, so there is no reason, a priori, for one side or the other to be more willing to think that Elections BC is rigging the election against them. But still, from what I have seen, all of the conspiracy thinking, rigging comments are coming from the right wing and not from the left.

These points show us how impervious to rational thought the (primarily) right wing conspiracy mindset is. I guess the question going forward is how many people get infected with this type of thinking. It seems to be growing, or maybe it is is just that social media makes it more visible. If it is growing, at what point does this level of irrational conspiracy thinking start to pose a real threat to the province and its institutions. I guess time will tell.

How much of that is actual conspiracy nuts and how much is just bots trying to rile up the conspiracy nuts (like the ones flooding the American election)? I highly doubt we'll see a hoser mob storming the legislature.

I think this is part of the right wing wanting to believe that they are victims in society.

So BC has leased Dominion tabulating machines. Guess what we have some Dominion conspiracy theories starting to be floated in Canada. Turns out Dominion is a Canadian company.

What is disappointing is the election was rushed. The Conservative Candidates tried to avoid talking to the media or taking part in debates. So we are only now starting to learn about some of these people.

The Conservative candidate Juan de Fuca-Malahat is one piece of work.

Quote:
B.C. Conservative candidate uses racist slur for Indigenous Peoples in interview

A B.C. Conservative candidate awaiting the results of a recount that could determine who forms the provincial government used a racist slur to describe Indigenous Peoples during an election-night interview.

During the hour-long interview, a recording of which was given to Postmedia News late Thursday, Sapozhnikov spoke about her concerns with Indigenous history courses being taught in B.C. universities, her view that B.C.’s adoption of the UN Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act renders every non-Indigenous British Columbian a “second-rate citizen,” and said that “90 per cent of Indigenous people use drugs.”

B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad said in an emailed statement Friday he was “appalled and deeply saddened” by Sapozhnikov’s comments. He said her “remarks do not reflect the values of our party or the vision we have for a united British Columbia, and we are taking this matter seriously.”

But Rustad made no indication he was considering her removal from the party.

The Conservatives are clearly showing who they are and what they are about when they reject a candidate that shares these types of views.

Yeah, I highly doubt many of these "people" will be reelected if they keep running their mouths - doubly so if/when the ex-Libs/United reform as a new centre-right alternative (Prog Cons?).

NDP are gonna flip Surrey-Guildford.

Eby won a majority of at least 47 seats

If it were to be stolen, surely the Dippers wouldn't have "chosen" to lose a large chunk of Surrey and Vancouver Island?

Has he been listening to the sort of people who say things like "My gut says the Juan De Fuca-Malahat will flip to the Cons. Central Surrey is a riding I would watch as well."?

See my post above. Expecting there to a rational component to this type of thinking is a mistake.
