They have been specifically mentioning these sites as "family friendly" and "alcohol free". There are numerous accounts of gatherings in Vancouver being neither of those things, so, you get what you ask for in this case... I'm ok with it. I'm looking forward to spending some time down there on Saturday, then back home for some HDTV and cold beer.

In short; no. But what are YOU going to do about it

The BCCLA has a pending lawsuit about this, claiming that mandatory searches and seizures in public areas by police are unlawful.

By virtue of you wanting to participate in a public event the police can not assume you are there to commit a crime and therefor search you. Of course, you have the right to refuse to have any of your private property searched by police. This includes your clothing, bags, pack sacks, purses, trunk of your car and your home.

LEGALLY there is nothing they could do about you refusing a search on a public street. But you'd probably be denied access, anyways

Of course, Rogers Arena is free to molest you all they want, as it is their private property, and you accept security procedures as written on the ticket.

There are plenty of places to drink while watching the game. No need to do it on the street.

Certainly. I have no intention of doing anything the cops don't want me to do. But on the other hand I don't want my compliance to be rewarded with harassment by law enforcement. I wouldn't consider it to be overbearing at this point (again, unlike Yaletown last year) but I'm not thrilled about it either.

It's total security theatre anyways. Anyone could sneak in beers or whatever if they really wanted to (and many did).

232 Street? The jam usually never passes 200th. Google maps gives me backups up to 192nd street. This is on a Saturday, which is really abd.

There is also a huge lineup waiting to get on the Skytrain at King George Stn.

Downtown Vancouver itself appears to be a disaster. Every street shows as a red on google maps traffic.

I was downtown it was a disaster - granville street was not moving for one block - 100's of people had to stream through sears to to get from georgia to robson street

lots of families were on robson wondering what to do you could tell they wanted to catch the excitement but granville was just wall to wall people not moving

anyway popped down to canada place where there was still a lot of people but much more room and much more family friendly

they should have had more screens or something - it was just not enough - they had food trucks parked on granville street and there were people jumping on them and going on the roofs, and the canada line emergency exit thing was crowded with people on the roof, the payless shoe store was full on the second level as people tried to watch from there - a few roofs along granville street had people on them

i overheard quite a few people say screw this we are not going to miss this game we can't see anything lets go home and watch it

anyway have some pics coming soon

Burrows again!? Jeez, we must never get tired of his game-winning-goals
I noticed that while Vancouver's crowds were actually cheering and jumping, Surrey's crowd was most of the time just standing and clapping.... no spirit in this city

the worst part about granville is the fencing it really restricts the flow

Pure awesomeness!

I would have to say that this has been the most amazing and entertaining cup run I have seen for some time, of any team. Aside from the grinding defensive nashville series, i have great memories for chicago, san jose and boston - and we've only played 2 games with the B's.

truely, this is the greatest of times I have been thru as a follower of the canucks!

Canucks party on Granville Street (four hours after the game) | June 4th 2011

After work I headed down to Granville Street to see the crowds and arrived around midnight. The atmosphere by that time had definitely evolved into more of a Saturday night party crowd, but there were still some high-fives and cheers, plus plenty of jerseys and Canucks gear. I walked the five blocks from Davie to Robson and took some photos at each intersection and then a long shot looking back.

Looking north from Davie Street.

The amount of garbage left on Granville Street this morning was ridiculous. I don't understand some people.
