In related news, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny have signed on to the Dreamscape Board of Directors.

An Outlet mall is really a different beast than anything else we have in the city. A lot of the retailers, even though they have names you recognize, don't exist outside of a proper outlet mall. For example the Coach Factory Store planned for Seasons is a completely different chain than the Coach store in Polo Park.

YWG can easily be expanded from my understanding. There are plans for both more gates on the existing building and a second terminal building. If there was enough incoming traffic to warrant there is also a plan for how a second runway could be added on the existing site. All those changes would be purely driven by passenger volumes. Build the Dreamscape, increase the traffic through YWG and it will expand.

True and there actually was another runway not to long ago. They tore it up for whatever reason. But I know in the long term plans there was a new runway to the north of the new terminal and another wing to the terminal itself.

The old runway you're referring to was shortened when the AC hangar was built in the 70s and turned into a strip for propeller craft, but as the numbers of those types of planes dropped off, it was used less and less and was ultimately decommissioned.

You are correct though, there is a long-term plan to build another runway that effectively parallels the one that goes NW/SE (I can never remember their actual numbers), although who knows how long it could be before that happens.

I think the current plan is to add more gates (expand) the existing terminal if needed. On top of that I think the plan is if demand suddenly hits a huge and sustained boom to warrant a second terminal it would be built similar to where the old terminal was but slightly west, such that you would effectively walk to the western/Canadian end of the current terminal and cross into terminal 2. That is so far off though we are much more likely to see a replacement for the current terminal built before the passenger traffic warrants operating two full terminals.

I know the airport is busy at peak times only, but they might need to do this soon. When I left to Puerto Vallarta in January, all of the Canada/International gates were full. We had to use a US gate (gate 3), and share the entrance (gate 4) with another Westjet flight leaving to Edmonton at the same time.

^ I have to admit I was a little surprised when the new terminal design was unveiled some years ago... I was expecting more gates than they ended up putting in. I'm not surprised that it's getting congested.

I realize that. I just don't understand why, given the fact that half of Grant Park is empty, they wouldn't have adapted it to include a few outlets. They must be overcharging for their rent, because on paper it seems to have everything going for it. It's well located in an affluent area with McNally, a grocery store, a flagship liquor mart, a Tim's, and a popular movie theatre as anchors. I realize though that Target's incompetence didn't help them at all.

^^ The biggest issue with Grant Park is that it is essentially a big box mall repurposed as a fully enclosed mall with limited national chains. For example it is practically unheard of for Microsoft to open a store in a mall that doesn't already have an Apple store. That goes on in mall leasing on a much larger scale so if you don't have national chains it can be extremely difficult to get any of them.

The layout of Grant Park mall is also horrible. Sure it has a relatively popular grocery store and LC but you can go in the door, get your groceries, hit the LC and not even see 95% of the mall. There is a reason that every major mall in Winnipeg used to have a grocery store as a (boat) anchor and now only Grant Park does, heck at one point Grant Park had a double boat anchor...

Outlet malls are commonly setup as a giant square in the middle of parking. They have entrances off the corners and at mid-runs on their longer side. With almost zero parking behind the mall that would not work for Grant Park. Also as I mentioned previously the stores in an outlet mall are different than anything outside them despite the name of the door. Those outlet stores tend to work with less that five players that run all the outlet malls in North America. The company that owns and operates Grant Park is not on that list.

As for the location of Grant Park, it is actually rather poor. Grant is effectively a collector street and that is the only street the mall is visible from. The nearby collector, Taylor, has zero presence from the mall and someone driving past would have no idea it was there. Look at Polo Park -- visible from Portage Ave, St Vital visible from St Marys and Bishop, KP visible from Regent and even Garden City visible from McPhillips and Leila.

I would also challenge that Grant Park is in an affluent area. It might be better than Garden City but it is surrounded by rental apartment units.

Overall Grant Park really has nothing going for it which is why it struggles and will continue to struggle until it is ultimately bulldozed.

That is the exact issue, Winnipeg to Puerto Vallarta is under a five hour flight. Instead of having those sun destinations leaving around 6:00 am get the Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago, etc flights out the building. Have the sun flights leaving between 9-11. Changing that up spreads the gate load at YWG out more and still gets people into their hotels around check in time with the possibility of a return flight full of passengers.

^ I guess Grant Park's value is a matter of perspective... if you look at it as a neighbourhood strip mall then you have to be impressed as it goes beyond the usual roster of supermarket/bank/insurance broker/liquor mart and actually offers some decent retail shops and nice amenities like a great bookstore and cinema.

By contrast, if your expectations are of a regional mall, you will be disappointed. GP is too old, small and outdated to be a major mall, an outlet mall or anything like that. Fortunately for those who live in the area, they have many alternatives not too far away.

It looks to me like the terminal can be extended eastward a bit, making it symmetrical like you've said. Also looks like they will be getting close to the large tank farm. So wouldn't want to extend it too much that way.

Does anyone know if there were plans for a separate building, linked by a walkway of some sort? Or just a typical building type expansion.
