I thought the increases in insurance costs after 9/11 played a significant role in Wet and Wild (Skinner's) closing.

Can you please provide source links to backup your claims that:

- Bishop is being extended from Lag to Plessis.
- Multifamily housing and retail is being developed behind Southland park.
- Costco is opening a new store in that location.

My Internet might not be as good as what you have in your mother's basement as I cannot find sources on any of those.

First, that dreamscape shit is total BS. They want to raise awareness about it. Completely pie in the sky, not going to happen, type of shit. I want to build the tallest tower in the world, right here in downtown Winnipeg. Let's talk. That's the kind of thing that is.

The Google Maps location is Sage Creek. Theres houses planned for that land. And the Bishop extension goes right along the power lines to at least Plessis. Then it's outside CoW control. The route beyond that is undefined, but is supposed to connect with Plessis underpass basically. There's a future route through the golf course. I believe the inner ring road study slated for a couple years will be sorting this sort of thing out. Dawson would be re-aligned to connect with the Fermor access point already there for the north side.

Maybe they were talking general area. Maybe east of Plessis. I don't know.

The land behind Southland Park is indeed slated for development. Not sure about Costco, but it's going to be mostly houses, with some commercial along Fermor IIRC. The development name is something like Dawson Trails and has been in front of the City for re-zoning, etc. The land has been cleared of all trees a year or two ago.

This thing. I think they're only doing the part north of Dawson right now.
http://clkapps.winnipeg.ca/dmis/viewpdf.asp?sectionid=368960

Edit: To add, if anyones curious or noticed it. Bishop is built on the detour alignment where it connects to Lag. If there were ever to be an overpass built, it would go north of the Bishop/Lag intersection. It would basically straighten out Bishop from Boul De La signeueurueureurueueurur to Lag.

Chill out everybody.

One thing I'd like to know about the Plessis extension is how they'll make the railway overpass work where Fermor intersects with Plessis? The railway turns SE there which would make it very awkward for a road that's supposed to go S/SW.

Very awkward Esquire. That rail overpass is the biggest POS around. MIT paved over it with asphalt last year. Right over the expansion joints and everything. Bridge engineering nightmare haha.

I think if it ever were to happen, there would basically be a new interchange built between Plessis and Fermor. Build is "overlapping" with the existing one. Decommission the existing one.

Like this. Expensive at Fermor. Theres large overhead hydro towers there. Nevermind the rail overpass and interchange. Likely replacement of the Fermor overpass of Symington.

I think if we can build a domed city, we can achieve this.

Yeah, that makes sense. The existing overpass looks ancient so it's probably getting close to due for a replacement anyway. I wonder what kind of interchange they'd build there? It's two fairly busy routes so it would probably have to be a bit more complicated than a simple diamond.

Also, your map is a good reminder that as with Moray, the Bishop Grandin eastward expansion will end up spitting out a high speed, high volume street to a local road (Plessis north of the CN line). Not ideal, but I'm not sure what else can be done given that the city squandered the right of way that was once set aside for a major arterial.

Speaking of interchanges on Fermor, will there ever be one built at Lagimodiere? With the high speeds and traffic volumes it's pretty treacherous... I'd hate to have to drive that route every day.

Haha, maybe the interchange can be built with leftover funds from Dreamscape's kickstarter

Source? I've heard this rumour before and people have told me that it simply isn't true.
Seems like a weird place to put one as the are 2 (Regent & McGillivray) within reasonable proximity. Seems like there would be better locations.

^^If the City ever went ahead with this, a new 4-lane road would be built to the east of Plessis. The existing Plessis with the residential drives would likely stay as is (where the cops always radar from a buddies private driveway in the 50 km/h zone), and act as a frontage road. The Plessis underpass pictures show a future route traversing the golf course lands. What happens north of the Plessis underpass is a whole other thing.

In terms of interchange at Plessis and Fermor, some form of cloverleaf would be needed. If you're building this freeway type road, we all know how stupid traffic lights are. I think it would actually be quite busy, the new Plessis. People going from Transcona to the south and west sides of the City would have a sweet ride.

At Lag and Fermor, who knows. Another high volume location where a diamond simply wouldn't do. We just talked about a ton of cash. So all this is likely decades in the future.

Winnipeg's transportation master plan has Bishop being extended basically straight east and intersecting with Fermor. Nothing on their map to indicate plessis will be extended south of fermor.

Ya there's a few things on that TMP that are different than reality. Centreport for example. The original WATS plan from the 60's showed something similar to what I posted in that image.

Like I said though, not really sure what the plan is and hopefully the ring road study(if it goes ahead, Russ Wyatt's been thumping his chest on the topic) will clear it up. But since the City sold all the original right of way in the area of Regent, there's not a whole lot that can be done in that area.

Right at the guys belly is where we're talking about. City of Winnipeg boundary is Plessis Road.

Does anyone think we will ever see a vibrant, pedestrian-only street downtown? East 4th in Cleveland is very cool. There was the discussion about Albert, but that has not gone far.

It'd be nice. There's a street like that outside the mall in downtown Regina. Was there over the summer and they also had an additional street blocked off (not sure if its permanent or not) and there was a farmers market running. I'd love to se that in Winnipeg rather than having the one at the Hydro building.

Thing is, we go through this same old tired song and dance routine any kind of medium to large scale development is proposed in the city. Manitoba Hydro Building, MTS Centre, the new airport, the Jets coming back, and on and on and on. As soon as word gets out (officially or unofficially), people foam at the mouth and growl, like they have rabies. And then the constant barrage of negativity follows immediately after. Time and time and fucking time again. We are by far the most pessimistic, negative, NIMBY city in the entire country, dare I say even the continent. We constantly lament about how city council is brainless and lacks vision. Well I attribute a good chunk of that to the issue I speak of. We also whine about how slow progress is being made here. Well I think we all need to take a look in the mirror for that answer.

I just don't understand how Grant Park Mall can't get a dollar store for the past three years, but seasons can find enough traction to build a whole new mall a kilometre away.

I was just reading about the Dreamscape proposal on a different site.
I actually kind of know the guy behind it from a previous job. Super nice guy but I can't believe he has any chance of pulling this off. Major WTF moment seeing his name in there.

Why not use his resources to transform Point Douglas into something similar?

Apparently all the funding is in place, he's got a deal for the land, and he just needs the government to commit to build a few roads and a larger airport.

What a joke.

And Murray McNeill is almost as much of a joke for writing such a credible piece about it, unless his writing is dripping with sarcasm that I'm not picking up on.
