well it's not 5th and market and I don't know that the average tourist walks to Independence Hall in the first place. Not to mention there are a whole lot of folks already visible on market east that the visitor's bureau would rather not see hanging around the CBD. One of the issues with the 1401 Arch location is that there isn't a ton of pedestrian traffic there so it was easy for the probation folks to sort of take over the real estate outside the building. Market is is busier and one would hope that with a new lease and new design they can address some of the issues to reduce the amount of loitering outdoors.

Suburban Station on track for a shopping destination

Suburban Station is undergoing a major retail reboot to give commuters a reason to visit besides catching a train.

Over the next several months, AthenianRazak, the real-estate services firm hired by SEPTA to spice things up, will roll out mostly new food venues, along with some apparel shops and services in the $3.75 million phase one of the multiphase project, at the city’s busiest transit station.

The retail offerings will be called Station Shops at Suburban, and the station, with roughly 100,000 daily commuters, will get a new look and feel from its first upgrade in 15 years.

I recently used Suburban for the first time in at least 6-8 months and I am encouraged by the slow improvements made over the past 2-5 years. The concourse was very bright and felt a bit lively, even on a weekend when some of the stores are closed. I did not walk the entire underground concourse which has always been a bit sketchy but if they start with the immediate area around the stairwells to platforms, ticket office, and stairwells to JFK that will be great.

Plans Coming Into Focus For Red Bell Brewery

Located at 31st & Jefferson in Brewerytown.

It seems @genbrewerytown attended the most recent community meeting, at which developer John Wei presented plans to create 147 apartments, ground floor retail, and between 75 and 80 underground parking spaces. The plan would also entail the acquisition of part of the Brewerytown Orchard, a garden space immediately to the north of the old brewery, to be used for parking for the commercial tenants. Community response was apparently mixed, specifically as it relates to the parking aspect of the plan.

Its one thing to build a mediocre project at 17th + Callowhill but Broad + Washington deserved better. Much Better!!!! This is trash for that location.

^ The amount of apartments that have been built or will be built in the next couple years in this little pocket (girard to oxford, 30 to 32nd) is amazing, basically a whole new neighborhood built from scratch.

Fishtown apartment, rock-climbing gym project site hits market

Philadelphia developer Michael Samschick’s Core Realty is seeking a buyer for its building project near the Sugarhouse Casino in Fishtown that includes at least 179 apartments and a 22,000-square-foot rock-climbing gym.

Core is asking $11 million for the project at 1100 N. Delaware Ave., according to an email Monday from Rittenhouse Realty Advisors, which is marketing the 45,746-square-foot site with zoning for the development and a lease with the climbing-gym operator already in place.

Temple president outlines effort for a campus football stadium

During his state of the university address on Thursday, Temple president Richard M. Englert says the effort to get an on-campus football stadium built is ongoing. He reiterated several points that have been made in the past.

Temple plays at Lincoln Financial Field. This is the last year of an agreement with the Eagles, but Temple holds two, one-year options. Temple has already exercised its option for 2018 to play at the Linc and is expected to do the same for 2019.

“We also continue to study the potential for a multipurpose facility, including a stadium, classrooms, research space and a retail complex,” Englert said in his address. “We are especially studying the potential ramifications of such a facility on the neighbors adjacent to Main Campus.”

The stadium is expected to seat 35,000. On Feb. 9, 2016, the Temple Board of Trustees approved a resolution that the construction budget for the football facility shall not exceed $130 million.

Temple's stadium talk revives, protesters prepare blitz

With the revival of discussions about an on-campus football stadium at Temple University, a group of students, faculty, and community activists known as the “Stadium Stompers” plan to stage a protest Tuesday at the board of trustees meeting.

President Richard Englert announced late last month that the school would move forward with the planning process for the 35,000-seat, $135 million stadium, which had been tabled indefinitely since the summer of 2016 after his predecessor, Neil Theobald, was dismissed and the administration went into turmoil.

The Stompers, who had protested frequently during the 2015-16 school year, say that this time around they are taking a more theatrical approach, caricaturing board members by wearing suits and large paper masks in an effort to draw attention to what the protesters say are board members’ conflicts of interest.

Group leaders met with Englert this summer, and he heard the Stadium Stompers’ concerns, according to an emailed statement from university spokesman Brandon Lausch.

“No final decision has been made on this issue,” Lausch said. “That decision will be made based on what is best for the university and the North Philadelphia community.”

“They’re not looking to the future — not for the future of the neighborhood. They’re looking for the future of Temple University,” Loney said. “In their future, they just want Temple University to take over the whole neighborhood. Since we’re the focus for them, they’re the focus for us.”

Typical Philly mindset of not seeing the forest thru the trees.

Its not about the past pal. This is South Broad Street which should have the highest of standards moving forward into this century. Think human scale, walkability , grand design.

This gargantuan concrete rectangle looks like it belongs behind the airport not on Broad Street . There is no detail to this design just uglly blank walls.Its an eye-sorish, city blocking atrocity.

^agreed. Perhaps he prefers the vacant lot on the other side of Broad. It's been sitting there for years awaiting some grand development that the market can't support. How comforting to know it will probably look the same after 5 or 10 more years.
