MONTREAL , Oct. 8, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada is undertaking a major expansion of international services to Europe from Toronto , Montreal , Vancouver and Calgary . The airline today announced highlights of its Summer 2014 Europe schedule, which includes the introduction of year-round non-stop service from Toronto to Milan, Italy with up to five weekly flights, offering the only non-stop service between Canada and Milan . Flights to this key Italian business destination will feature Air Canada's award-winning Executive First cabin of service.
In addition, Air Canada will increase its year-round Toronto - Istanbul non-stop service to daily flights from three times weekly. The airline will expand the availability of its new international Premium Economy cabin with its introduction on Vancouver-London Heathrow flights year-round, as well as Montreal-London Heathrow flights during the peak summer travel season. Air Canada will also deploy larger aircraft from its international widebody fleet on flights from Calgary to London Heathrow and Frankfurt , as well as from Montreal to Brussels and Geneva in order to meet travel and cargo demand during the peak summer season.
So there is your response from Air Canada to Icelandair and any other airlines thinking of European operations. Expand capacity and new routes from their hubs.

It's a move to increase seats from YYC and some hub "protection" by AC. Unless they anticipate matching the FI fares from YEG this will have little to no affect on YEG on the 4 days in question. After all saving nearly 800-1000 per person to European destinations is pretty hard to beat!
If this will hurt anyone it will be BA in YYC.

Exactly Tuffyy, this is a move by AC that shouldn't be of concern to YEG.
For those of you AC haters, you now have an option on FI, make sure you use it. As for me, I will continue to use both flights depending on flights options. AC is serving Edmonton, do you really only want FI here?
I'm a bit surprised by the massive seat increase considering YYC's euro numbers have been sort of flat in the last two years. BA and KL better step up in YYC!
Not entirely sure but when you consider that FI also looked at the YYC market as a potential destination and stated the market is "over saturated". One can only wonder if it's a bulldog move by AC to get back more of its market share in YYC more directed at BA and KL. Particularly the latter who just announced it's adding a few 777 flights from YYC next summer to compliment its A330 flights. It's not related to anything in YEG IMHO.
Watch and wait. Not much to get excited about at this point in time. Our flights are booked on FI instead of AC to LHR for our flights into Europe and we arrive faster and $1000.00 less per person. Unless AC must be planning to have quite the seat sale via YYC.
My gut feeling is that they will can the YEG -LHR flight and do a serious consolidation into Calgary. With that amount of seat increase they have to draw from somewhere.
My gut is that this isn't really an announcement for Calgary at all, but more about more 767-300's being allocated to Rouge making room for the two new routes out of YUL.
What does that mean?? AC is preparing for the arrival of their 787-800's.
^^^ Yep! first ones due in 2014! I was looking at the current fleet movement and swapping and I'm trying to figure out where everything's going? 763's to Rouge, A330's to old 763 routes and 777's to old 330 routes. But my math shows at least one free A330... Probably sitting as a spare.
YEG-LHR won't see a change until the 788's arrive. As AC has said YEG will be a city that will see 788 service.

I doubt they will drop the flight. If they did, there would a be a very high chance of BA starting YEG. The demand is there.
As mentioned the YEG-LHR route isn't going anywhere. The only difference is it now faces some long over due competition in its very own back yard.
Just because AC is adding extra seats and a few new routes from its hubs has nothing to do with YEG.
To put it plainly if AC put a 777 on the YEG-LHR flight and reduced its fares by about 800-1000 bucks per person then that would indicate its intention of killing off FI in YEG.
This has no bearing on YEG.
Infancy a closer look reveals that AC is using its Rouge arm to target Air Transat. Pretty much every new 763 route to Europe announced by AC to be operated by Rouge are routes that only TS was offering.
