I have no idea how Canadians would react to an invasion or how many Canadians would side with the American invaders, but it's probably not realistic to expect 100% of Canadians to want to fight them.

And surely a decently large segment of the population would be blasé or fatalistic about the whole thing and therefore not interested in fighting back.

It's not mentioned often but in the Ukraine-Russia war there have been people who are technically Ukrainian nationals fighting alongside Russian troops against the Ukrainian army, especially from ethnically Russian regions in the Donbass (east).
As discussed in another thread, it appears that ~43% of young Canadians would want annexation if the terms of union include getting American citizenship and 1:1 CAD to USD switch. They certainly aren’t going to want to die to try and oppose it!

If that had included "you will no longer have universal healthcare and future healthcare is tied to your employer and private health insurance" I'd bet that 43% number would quickly be cut in half

Hard to say what that number means.

When you ask that same demographic group do you agree/disagree with, "I would never vote for Canada to join the US". you discover 75% of young Canadians agree and 25% disagree.

When you reverse the question and add some qualifiers you get the 43%.

The answers are contradictory. Its not just young Canadians, the other demographics have similar differences between the two questions.

Canada would be the most liberal state in the union. Abortion, gun control, minority rights, drug laws, labour laws, education, separation of state/church the list goes on and on.

The number of caveats and exclusions from US norms would be unworkable for the US.

While it no doubt still has good majority support, I'd say you might be seriously underestimating the disillusion with Canadian universal healthcare as it is accessible and provided these days.

Stats like this isn't really that surprising...25% of our population is foreign born and migrated here for economic reasons first and foremost.

In my experience most people under 35 don’t really appreciate universal healthcare unless they have had a serious health issue in their youth. It doesn’t help that most Canadians have no idea how expensive and mercenary America’s healthcare system is.

Yeah, it’s plausible that for a significant chunk of our immigrants, Canada was the consolation prize as they couldn’t get into the USA. Those people would of course favor a merger when asked.

That seems included in the numbers, which would explain why old people really don’t want to join the US, while kids are way more interested (placing a lot less value on “free” healthcare in the grand scheme of things.)

Most people under 35 can't access health care in Canada.

Even the Americans have better primary care access than we do.

The quality of care in Canada is also poor. We consider walk in clinic visits as "primary care", but that's absolute trash medicine that's basically the equivalent of throwing a bandage on your bleeding cancer. In the USA, if you have a family doctor you expect to see them for a good 15-20 minutes. Over here, the visits are barely 5 minutes.

I've been on BC's waitlist for a GP for about 6 years now. I got a call that I got one about two years ago. It was going to be an NP, but whatever. They were going to call me to book an appointment. Waited another year until I got an e-mail saying that the NP was too overwhelmed with the practice and decided to quit. Back on the list I go!

The Conservative lead is evaporating so fast, that I think by March 1, the Liberals will be leading.

I've had 2 different GPs in that time, it was my choice to change. I was even offered by a 3rd one to take me on if I wanted. Nothing but good, fast experience with routine low priority testing and follow-ups.

Everybody's experience is different, but I find people don't truly appreciate the system until they are in real trouble and it helps them out.

And how accepting of Canadian body bags do you think we all would be for an ultimately losing cause? The US could probably occupy 40-50% of our territory before we even noticed. I wouldn't mistake "buy Canadian" and cancelling trips to Disney for willing to die at the hands of the US.

Anyway, I take Trump at his word, he won't do this militarily, he will do this economically, if annexing is his actual plan and goal. I also wonder how much of our standard of living are we willing to give up while opposing joining the US.

Yup, I guess I have dying in a hallway "bed" for free to look forward to.

I know a thing or two about the system.

Having to make difficult health choices because you're not sure you can afford the treatment is worse. Canada isn't perfect, but it's better than the US system. To be clear that is what we are comparing it to.

Yet despite that added financial barrier, primary care access is the same in the USA (slightly higher even). We're doing worse, not better. That's less of statement about how good their system is and more about how bad ours is. The reality is that for someone who can't access health care in Canada, it matters little if the service is free or not.

Then why did you respond? lol.

And I stand by my hate for teachers, Who constantly whine about being overworked and underpaid. No elementary, junior high, or high school, teacher is worth six digits. Especially ones in have not Manitoba, Where more than one out of every four kids are living in poverty.
