Pelli has been responsible for some truly iconic buildings, the Petronas Towers in particular, but in recent years I think they've been rightfully accused of being somewhat staid and repetitive. The SF tower is a good example - a handsome building but ultimately just a variation of the same tower they've been designing for decades.

This is definitely one of their most outside-of-the-box designs. I think it's going to generate quite a bit of attention.

I think it is still 589 feet. Don't forget that this is two blocks closer to the river. The elevation change is 447 feet for Block 185 versus 467 feet for 360. 360's spire at times will appear "taller" by being at a higher sea level elevation. The top part of the sail is also a relatively slender element, so the rest of the top of the building will be lower, but still taller than 360's roof.

I'm surprised these weren't posted yet. Last Friday courtesy KaiserSoze at Surly Horns.

Well, that makes sense. JDawgboy and I were noticing that channel running around the perimeter of the site. It had water in it at the time. I guess that's the slurry wall?

Pelli Clark Pelli doesn't yet feature this project on their website. But I thought this was interesting. The same architect designing Block 185 designed the U/C Frost tower in San Antonio. He also designed what is now called the Wells Fargo Center in Minneapolis which is one of my favorite skyscrapers ever.

Quote:
Mr. Butler’s current commercial work includes Block 185, a 750,000-square-feet office tower in Austin and Frost Tower, a 450,000-square-feet office headquarters in San Antonio. In addition, his office tower and headquarters experience includes Norwest Tower (now Wells Fargo Center) in Minneapolis; Zurich Tower in The Hague, Netherlands; the Latin American Headquarters of Coca-Cola in Mexico City; and the design and master planning for the recently completed Torre Sevilla in Spain.

I'm really surprised the Cesar Chavez edge is still at grade with the sidewalk. Is it me or is this moving kinda slowly compared to most other projects?

This is diaphragm wall construction. So the only Austin project we can compare the progress to is the Marriott on CC. One of the benefits of this type of construction is that it is supposedly faster. But the main reason of course is the high water table.

Well judging by how quickly the Marriott on CC has risen so far, I'd believe that it's faster.

Thanks, ATX. I knew about the style of construction, but was fuzzy about underground parking and excavation I suppose.

I walked by today and that site is buzzing with activity!

Pelli posted this on Instagram. Is this the first official acknowledgement of the project by the firm?

So weird that they just keep calling it Block 185. C'mon guys. You can come up with a more creative name than that.

Yeah, at least calling it "Sail Tower" since they mentioned it emulates one would be a nice name

As mentioned before...I'm going to a meeting at The (Google) Spinnaker!

Vertical LED lighting would be very sweet on this building. Especially of done like they do buildings in Shanghai.
