Here I was enjoying being a dad and businessman, and now I feel like Michael Corleone. Every time I think I'm out, they pull me back in !

Your editorial on the Muni was so wrong, I am compelled to write.

I lost in 2004 for many reasons and, as I have stated publicly many times, I take full responsibility for that. But I can tell you first-hand, my support of our economic jewel that is the Muni was not one of them.

If you'll recall, all my caucus colleagues from Edmonton, save three, lost their seats and I doubt the three who did win would say it was easy.

Was my support of the Muni responsible for all their loses as well? I think not.

Rather than continue trying to beat me up in absentia, why not see the Muni for what it is -- a great economic driver -- and turn your attention to the real hole in downtown -- the University of Alberta endowment lands.

Selling those lands for inner-city housing make eminently more sense than closing a functioning economic machine like the Muni.

The U of A could then put the proceeds of the sale into an endowment fund and the interest could be used to lower students tuitions, clearly a win-win for all concerned.

I'm flattered that you feel my opinions elicited so much interest, but I fear it wasn't me.

Sometimes you just can't kill a good thing, no matter how hard you try.

Small minded individuals that don't see the whole picture -They just focus on the Muni and don't see the effects it has on YEG.

Short term economic gain - Muni vs long term - YEG and a better air traffic situation for Edmonton and surrounding area.

Yes, I almost blew a cork this morning. My mother was visiting from Vancouver and she said it was a shame that the Muni was closed and that she remembers the flights to Calgary were always full. She seemed to think that flying to Calgary was all we need in Edmonton.

I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from getting too worked up, but it goes to show how small minded many people are on the issue of air service.

Dropped a friend off at the airport lastnight.Got a phone call about half way home wondering if I could pick him up...Seems the flight to Heathrow was oversold and he agreed to be bumped to todays flight.Tells me its doing real good.

That is good news~!
Saw on Airliners that the Salt Lake City route is going to 1x daily in 2008???? What is going on? That route was packed every time I flew it.

Good to know! It would have been weird if they pulled out. Still baffled as to why they use a CRJ100.

Just finished flying YEG-LAS on Thursday a.m., and LAS-YEG on Sunday evening, both on U.S. Airways. No empty seats going down, one empty seat coming back. Someone was talking in the gate area coming back and said that she tried to get on the AC flight and then the WJ flight, and both were booked solid for all flights in October. That's good news!

City Centre Airport should close

I disagree with Mark Norris. The City Centre Airport should be closed altogether.

With approximately one million people in the greater Edmonton area, we simply are too small to support two airports.

Even much larger cities go with a one-airport concept. Berlin, which has a population of 3.4 million and three airports, is currently expanding the most peripheral of these airports. Subsequently, the two inner city airports will be closed to create a critical mass of passengers so that Berlin does not continue to be overlooked as an international air traffic hub.

Consolidating scheduled airport service at the Edmonton International Airport has resulted in much improved service. We now have 10 non-stop flights to major U.S. destinations, in addition to daily scheduled service to London's Heathrow.

The redevelopment of City Centre Airport lands could include a much-needed enlargement of NAIT (and thus eliminate the need for the proposed costly new Ralph Klein Campus in the city's southern suburbs), and would allow for the elimination of the 500-foot cap on heights of downtown buildings, which gives our downtown a stunted look.

In addition, the proceeds of the sale of City Centre Airport lands could be used to improve the flow of traffic to the International via road or LRT, allowing shorter commute times to the International from the downtown. This would be a true impetus for increased development in downtown.

I am puzzled by the Norris's comment that the University of Alberta endowment lands are the "real hole in downtown" which should be sold. The University of Alberta endowment lands are not even downtown! They are on the south side, and the city is already building an LRT station at this new south campus for the University of Alberta.

The NAIT student senate has formed and advocacy committee in regards to the above.
The hope is to avoid the splitting of the Campus.

Why? No funding has been secured for the south campus. Its really gone nowhere since the announcement. Now would be the time to change strategies and stick to a single campus model.
Current campus will be well served by transit and with the closure of the muni would allow for vertical clearence to construct student housing and the land area to accomdate all the needed expansion, as well as new facilities for sports/leisure.

Campus splitting was a really bad idea, that resulted from lack of land. With allocation of muni land to NAIT it could be avoided.

GMAC is another story, they have no viable land to continue their expansion.
