SkydivePilot:

Easy now. Kgc might make some statements in his posts that seem exaggerated and over-the-top, but that's because he's excited and optimistic about his town. For you to hit back with your own anecdotal evidence about what's happening down in Regina compared to what's happening up here just screams immature and insecure. We've done the city vs. city pissing match before and it's pointless, arbitrary, and nasty. So just leave it off of this board.

Not great for a second post by the way, not great.

in all reality those comments, will always be, are quite bold to make one never never knows what the future holds , though we should have respect for both cities as both are doing well , it is always best best to make your point known on the home city page as most of us read the other cities pages

Saskatoon may be geographically more central at the meso-scale (meaning just Saskatchewan); however, Regina is more central at the MACRO scale (in reference to North America). Which would YOU rather be? (Hence the GTH)

Regina's downtown resembles a small-scale rendition of Dallas, whereas Saskatoon resembles Prince Albert!!!! Moreover, don't forget the fact that Regina is the capital city; possesses the Riders; and is "Home of the RCMP" as well!! Oh, and by the way, you should as well, go drive by the RCMP on Dewdney Ave. West, for it is now the size of a respectable university campus!!! Don't take my word for it --- go see for yourself. (Though Saskatoon still has the U.of S.)

285-290 sounds about right. Regina won't be far behind though.

While Skydive pilot's remarks are direct, I agree that KJC087 has to be called on remarks like "Saskatoon will always be the economic center of activity in Saskatchewan." I do not purport pissing contests between Regina and Saskatoon because it never gets anywhere. I do wish economic prosperity for both cities, however, those remarks are quite bold and brash considering the economic expansion Regina is undergoing at this time. I have lived in both Regina and Saskatoon off and on and find them to be very similar in terms of demographics, size and overall feel. Each city has bragging points and areas to work on. Saskatoon is the gateway to the economic activity in the north, can lay claim to cutting edge research at the U of S and will have a beautiful development in River Landing. Regina is the centre for agriculture, government and is currently engaged in a host of private/ public sector developments (Global Transportation Hub, Mosaic tower, Capital Pointe, dome stadium, etc.) and downtown revitilization. In my opinion, neither city can lay claim to being the "economic center" right now. Civic pride is a good thing but lets temper it with reason and an informed opinion.

^ Now there's a reasonable post I can agree with.

Let's consider this matter put to rest.

Regina vs Saskatoon is like comparing Edmonton and Calgary.

Besides. People from regina hate regina.

On another note, MSTRKRFT was...well. Fucking amazing. Tequila looks great, a great crowd, no fights or bitching, just enjoying the great music. lots of room, but they still managed to pack the place! The dance floor is great, a good DJ booth, nice lighting, and some VERY classy bars (there are 3 or 4 I think)

here's a video of JFK (half of MSTRKRFT) Honestly, best night I've had at a bar.

http://www.facebook.com/v/452469301114

I'd post some more photos. That place was rockin hard.

Yikes. Not sure this post was necessary. Although neither was the comment that preceded it.

Regina obviously has a lot more going on than Saskatoon right now, in terms of developments and exciting projects. But Saskatoon still has the stats. And despite all the activity in Regina, Saskatoon is still seeing the numbers. Although it's possible that perception will transform reality and the numbers may spike in Regina next. But that's years away.

At least some people like it! I have only heard bad things so far. A friend broke his foot the first night because of random steps placed in complete darkness. I was also told it looked quote "slapped together". Personally I will never step foot in the place mainly because it's just not my thing. Maybe it will do better than Calgary's and stay open?

Some riveting long weekend news to get us back on track...

Courthouse reno on hold
The StarPhoenix July 31, 2010

The provincial government's plan to expand and renovate the Queen's Bench courthouse in Saskatoon is currently on hold for budget reasons, Justice Minister Don Morgan has confirmed.

Construction on the three-year project, estimated to cost $25 million, was expected to start this fiscal year.

"When we were doing the budget for this year we made the decision that were were going to defer that particular project for a year," Morgan said in an interview Friday.

That doesn't necessarily mean construction will start next year, either.

"We haven't done the budget for 2011, so we don't know what impact things like the flooding and the other things that have taken place are going to have on the budget," Morgan said.

Plans for the expansion call for a three-storey addition to the Spadina Crescent courthouse, creating two new courtrooms, new meeting rooms and offices.

I definitely thought you were referring to Regina when I started reading this. Then I realized it didn't make any sense.

I'm not debating whether or not Saskatoon is better then Regina. I'm not interested in a pointless debate. Every city in the world has its pros and it's cons. I'm simply stating that Saskatoon has massive potential to expand and sustain its growth, which in turn will promote cultural and economic benefits to the city.

We have discussed the transportation hub on here and no one is probably interested in reopening that case. As for sports teams I don't think it matters which city the league is really based in. SK is a small province, mass commutes of fans will always occur for any major league team that is SK so ultimately the location is really not that important. The U of S is known nationally and internationally for its research and development as well it has been deemed to be one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada. It may not have the gardens of UVIC or UBC but it has outstanding architecture. From the admin building done in our national architectural style (neo-gothic) that is a national heritage site, to some of the most pristine forms of brutalist architecture in the country (main library building).

As for wanting a downtown like Dallas, I would take PA ANYDAY! My partner just came back from a conference in Texas and had plenty of time to see the sites and d/t and said it was the most stagnant, unhappening, un pedestrian friendly place he had ever been. I wish no Canadian city the urban planning nightmare of any American city.

I say long live SK, Saskatoon and Regina and may every place in this great province prosper How is that for cheese ?

Cool vid Kruzat!

I regret not bringing ear protection -- my ears were still ringing this morning! JFK had the dance floor jumping through his entire set. Can't recall his name, but the dj before JFK threw down some massive tracks as well. Tequila is a decent venue. The size, layout, light and sound system definitely set it apart from other places. The three video screens were nice, but the continuous, uninterrupted bare wall that they're projected onto begs for something larger, more stimulating.

Friendly, good lookin' crowd too!

Hahah yeah, drunk + dark + steps...not a good combo. That seems to happen no matter where I go, happens when I'm sober and in a well lit area. Sometimes on flat ground as well haha..

The 'slapped together' thing doesn't really aply. I don't really give a shit if it was slapped together. I'm drunk, it's dark, there are many other distractions. It looks nice, I didn't notice anything that looked out of place. Everything was fresh and new, all the seating was placed well, the bars looked great, amazing lighting, everything fit perfectly together. I'd say go check it out sometime, just sit and have a few drinks, it's really nice looking place!

Maybe I can get JFK to spin on my deck hahah...now THAT would be a sick party.

This is not construction related, but does speak to the over all impression Saskatoon currently projects (at least for some).

Had a young couple from Calgary stay at our place this past weekend (they had come here for an ultimate Frizbe tournament). They are both in their mid to late 20's. The young lady had never been to Saskatoon and was incredibly impressed. She could not say enough about how beautiful, hip and exciting this city was. Her comments included saying how our downtown was way more exciting and active then Calgarys' at night and that she loved all the amenities without having to fight traffic (I guess the traffic one is all a matter of perspective). She was absolutely glowing about her experience here and proclaimed she could not wait for a return visit. She asked why we kept this such a secret...guess we DO need to do more promotion to get this demographic to at least try Saskatoon.

Just imagine the kind of PR this active young lady is going to provide Saskatoon on her return to Calgary! Saskatoon could use a lot more development and amenities, but it really does show well even in its current state.

Anyone have any recent gossip regarding tenants at University Heights Square in between Willow Grove and Erindale? The buildings are going up pretty quickly so a November opening is definitely a reasonable assumption. Just wondering if any tenants besides KFC, Shell, Shoppers, CIBC, and Tim Horton's have been announced or rumored.

Unhappy

Hi folks:

I apologize for my ad hominic remark about our skyline in compared to Regina's. We all know that the view traveling westbound over the College Drive bridge is by --- all accounts ---- SPECTACULAR!!! I am sure that anyone from elsewhere would also concur with that. Regina is starting to really impress me though too. Both cities are evolving into GREAT cities!!!

Saskatchewan is really becoming a real economic player --- not only domestically --- but internationally as well. I personally have a perpetual vested interest of the fact that our two international airports have each experienced massive increases in scheduled air traffic within the last couple of years. We no longer need to drive to Calgary/Edmonton/Winnipeg in order to catch flights like we often times had to back in the '60s/'70s/'80s and even in the '90s.

I DON'T want to get political; however, we can't afford to have another NDP government administration any time soon for our prosperity partly depends on that premise. Furthermore, our legislature was designed to accomodate 125 MLAs --- and we are still nowhere near that mark. Hopefully we will be able to fill that 100-year old structure to its full potential in decades to come.

I have always enjoyed --- and continue to enjoy all of your postings.

Let the good times roll!!!

prairieguy - I'm completely overwhelmed by the difference in cities from Eastern Canada to Western Canada. A city in Ontario with 225K is just laughed upon as a complete joke with nothing but box centers, no central downtown and km after km of roadway. I'm more and more impressed with Saskatoon's efforts to model itself after a large urban centre even though it is small. I think with continued cultural, commercial, retail amenities added the city will continue to wow visitors as not just a small city but a small city with some major happenings.
