Crews are finishing up the final touches on this brand new deck down the street from the Capital. Notice the rooftop accent, a nice touch that looks great with the facade. Too bad state legislators built themselves this fancy deck while local legislators let Novare build these. However this deck is still my personal favorite.
Honestly, the Novare deck is by far the best of these three decks. The 191 deck and the new Capital parking deck may have some tacked-on architectural features that help disguise the function of the structure, but they present a blank facade to the street with zero retail or active use. Who cares if it looks nice if it kills the pedestrian experience? Meanwhile, although it's ugly, Novare's Skyhouse deck incorporates more than 8,000 sqft of retail, some of which has already filled.

Trying to make a parking deck look pretty is like putting lipstick on a pig, but I wouldn't be too harsh on the Captial parking deck. This one is actually going to help the pedestrian experience around the State capital. When it is complete the existing deck to the East of the capital building (next to the connector) will be demolished. The plan is to creat a small greenspace there that will be used for gatherings/demonstrations. Currently there is not a good spot for those kind of events.

The other plan is to close the road on the South side of the capital building (between the capital and the office buildings inluding this new deck) to allow safer passage for legislators and other staffers to go between these buildings.

So, I think an area will be improved by the addition of a parking deck for once.

Even longer term, although I'm not sure it will ever happen, is the plan to cap the connector and connect the capital to a linear park/greenspace between MLK and Memorial Drive. This park would run from the capital all the way to Oakland Cemetary. It's called Capital Gateway Park or something like that. It was included in the "Greenline" study for downtown a few years ago, but I don't know if the State has any guts to fund the cap over the connector.

The city has been quietly buying up the land between MLK and Memorial for a while now and that park may still happen. But how awesome would it be to have the whole park connected from the Capital to Oakland?

While the incubator will include some tech companies, emphasis will be on attracting design-focused “solopreneurs” and startups. The incubator provides a central place for Atlanta’s design and brand talent to hang out together and build their ideas into companies, Tavani said. It’s going to be a very curated group of companies,” noting the building would house 100 to 150 people at capacity.

In addition to working space and programming, such as speaker series and events, the facility could include a restaurant, coffee shop and an artist workshop — turning it into a destination for the general public.

Given the location's proximity to Georgia State's new Law and proposed B Schools; the Atlanta Streetcar and MARTA stops and the bustling broad Street corridor, this could be a catalytic project for downtown Atlanta.

wait— so the building is not currently used?

I think the church is considered Buckhead rather than Midtown, however.
Actually it's kind of both. I work across the street and we tell people we're "between Midtown and Buckhead" because it's not clearly in either one.

Traditionally, folks have said Midtown ended and Buckhead began at the 1-75/85 split. Most of the Brookwood area came into the city as part of the 1952 annexation.

However, a little chunk up to Ardmore Place had been annexed earlier, so there's a good argument that the southern tip of Brookwood (including this church) is its own place. The area has certainly begun to develop a distinct identity in recent years.

It's one of my favorite parts of town.

Indeed. Except lots of people don't know where "Brookwood" is (or confuse it with Brookhaven).

Blank: Falcons stadium groundbreaking in March (Atlanta Business Chronicle)

They're starting one month early, and I hear the churches are already packing up.

Is this yoo?

According to real estate blog site Curbed, work to raze the homes on the 13th Street lot between Juniper Street and Piedmont Avenue began over the weekend and, as of Wednesday night, was quickly approaching the abandoned apartments next door. This the same site that where developer Tivoli pitched a 25-story apartment tower, dubbed Yoo on the Park, as far back as 2008. yoo (they prefer it lowercase) is a partnership between internationally known "property entrepreneur" John Hitchcox and designer Philippe Starck.

I think I recall hearing about a proposal for a pretty tall building on 14th, where Symphony Hall was once proposed? Anyone hear anything lately about this?

Nothing lately, but the rumor floated was 2 towers with 400-bed hotel, residential, and office space + retail along 14th.

two ideas were being floated— one was a hotel project on 14th street that the above poster mentioned, and the other was a 1200 room hotel that the GWCC was thinking about building. since the lot is only a few acres across, we assume that it must be pretty tall.
