Interesting. I thought I was confused (and a bit more now). It seems there are two site plans. The one recently approved and released and the one you referenced on page 31. One states the tower's height at 687'6" ("old" one) and the other at 685' ("new" one).

Based on the scale of the drawings of the East Elevation, there is 5' more building below the 0 Lobby level.

And since I was measuring the Pool over hangs 16'.

Both the original site plan and the released one show the height measurement from the south elevation. So the building has gone from 688'(rounded) to 685' - at least on the south side.

I noticed just now that Facebook's "trending" stories (located at the top right on Facebook) has a link with all the articles/stories on the building.

By the way (and this is off topic) but did anyone else notice something different about 101 Congress in that news video clip??? I didn't see it lit lastnight or the night before but I like what they are doing. Hopefully they are finishing the 3rd triangle.

Back to the Independent. I still think they are splitting hairs when they say tallest building west of the Mississippi. In all fairness it's tied with the Austonian and besides you won't he able to see a clear difference in height between them when looking at the skyline other than if you look from the east or west, the closer of the two from your vantage point will appear taller.

But sure, two feet is two feet so they get to gloat over two measly feet. This has been a pathetic competition for the title of tallest. If I was the developer, I'd make sure that the tower would most definitely be the tallest and break the 700 foot imaginary glass ceiling that seems to be over DT.

"The Independent is scheduled to break ground tomorrow and will become Austin's tallest tower. #austinbisnow"

I don't know if that's accurate or not, but I thought I would share.

That probably means that the the demo/site prep that is supposed to finish this month gets underway. The official groundbreaking with the suits and golden shovels and tents and horderves is the one in January.

That is what I believe to be the case. We'll see tomorrow.

FYI, the independent site is very clean and clear as of the past few days. Thinking that means they've cleared everything that doesn't need to be there and are ready for demo.

Here's the BisNow article that was the source of the tweet in deerhoof's post about the Independent starting (i.e. demo) yesterday. As with most BisNow articles, it mostly about the faces behind the projects we already know about.

I just got this in an email from Urbanspace. Official groundbreaking is January 11th:

Quote:
Urbanspace is excited to annouce that The Independent has officially closed on the 1.7 acres of land in the heart of downtown Austin set to house the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi River. With construction financing secured and Balfour Beatty Construction US confirmed as the general contractor, construction has begun!

Save the date for January 11th to join Urbanspace and The Independent for a groundbreaking ceremony as we celebrate this milestone. More details to come soon.

According to posts on their Facebook page, actual groundbreaking is mid-December (12/09 apparently) with January being the "official" groundbreaking. Has anybody seen the site in the last two days to notice any significant demolition?

Walked by yesterday... Definitely cleared but no heavy machinery on site for demo yet.

Side note - kinda silly that there are somewhere around 28 different groundbreakings for every project....(slight exaggeration)

The bridge is up

I really hope they take out some of the parking along that corner, and then extend the sidewalk to the Cirrus R&D facility. The parking because especially close to the corner on the north side of the street at the PGI building, people will park really long cars that create a bottleneck and people just whip around it.
