Not too late to tell the helicopter to put the Fairmont's 139 ft spire on this one by mistake.

Hummm...I wonder how a spire would look on this one? Intriguing idea.

They offset a few levels on ours to make it quirky, but not enough to make it amazing. Even a shorter version of the one being built in NYC would have made a stronger statement against our relatively tame but pretty skyline. All anyone has to do is compare the two to see the true jenga building. The bottom half is rather pedestrian except all the balconies that add a ton of texture, but the top half goes wonky, and the top half of that even wonkier. Yeah I like this one more. The one thing they could do with ours to make me happier is to add at least two more offsetting cubes.

Yup. It's just awkward looking the way it's designed now. It needs to be more of what it's trying to be instead of being such a half-hearted stab at being slightly different. But I'm glad we're getting it, it's certainly better than what's currently occupying that space, and hopefully it will come off better in real life than it does on "paper."

The site plan was approved and released yesterday which just happened to coincide with the announced start of the project. The project files are not attached at the time of this posting, so we don't yet know if there were any minor tweaks to the project.

The released elevations (pages 16-19) were added to approved site plan today. I can't tell if the height has changed any. The building looks like a few feet taller when it's measured from the north elevation due to the slope of the land, and the height of the top portion of the mechanical screen above the damper on level 62 is not indicated.

According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), there are three official categories for measuring the height of a building: 1-Height to Architectural Top (the one used to officially rank towers by height), 2-Height to Highest Occupied Floor, 3-Height to Tip.

Definitions:
"Height to Architectural Top" - Height as measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the architectural top of a building, including spires, but not including antennae, signage, flag poles or other functional-technical equipment.

"Height to Highest Occupied Floor" - Height as measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the finished floor level of the highest occupied floor within a building.

"Height to Tip" - Height as measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the highest point of the building, irrespective of material or function of the highest element (i.e., including antennae, flagpoles, signage, and other functional-technical equipment).

Having said that, I am not sure how The Independent has been measured to obtain the current 688' height.

Actually, those images show the building back down to 685'. I think the extra three (or four) feet came in with the dip in grade. However, if there is no "open-air, pedestrian entrance" at that level, then it does not count toward height.

Check out page 31, post 603 to see. The elevations were posted to the city's website back in May.
