I think the first thing MLS and the Whitecaps should realize is that people don't really care that much about the Whitecaps.
over 20K people went to watch the whitecaps play an away game at BC Place last December.

About a 1000 people travelled to Mexico to watch them play in the concacaf cup

there are games with over 50K in attendance

Arguably, one of the best soccer players of all time currently plays for the whitecaps.

Lots of people care

Yet prospective buyers are avoiding it like the plague?

there are many reasons why an investor may not want to invest. the first reason might be the price that the purchaser is asking for is unreasonable.

Also, nobody buys a business where the landlord can kick you out at any time. Leases have value.

Then they should lower the price, not rely on the taxpayer to sweeten the pot.

I agree, a long term lease from Pavco shouldn't be a problem for either party.

""It's a bit of an ignominious tradition in sports in North America," he said. "This is an independent company. They are there to make profits. It's very curious to me when capitalists, if you will, advertise their own skill level." "

Tale as old as sports

They are worth over half a billion dollars Canadian. Talk about a joke! But it's the old adage: the rich get richer.

The purchase price being asked is definitely unreasonable that’s why no one has purchased it. But when the stipulation of keeping the team in Vancouver is taken away, it suddenly becomes much more attractive

But the other teams wouldn't get any cash from a new team coming in versus the relocation (it's not clear how that would be handled by the league)

They should sell the team to all the fans lol

and even if they care, BC Place is fine and we shouldn't be spending any taxpayer money whatsoever to move them to another facility

BC Place's location probably generates a lot more for the local economy (restaurants, etc.) than a Hastings Park site would and is easier to access.

Good timing for the World Cup

A new report says Major League Soccer (MLS) is looking to move the Whitecaps out of Vancouver.

The Athletic published a story on Monday saying MLS has told owners around the league that it is exploring relocating the team, with Las Vegas being the top candidate for the new market.

Vancouver mayor urging BC Place to make a deal with the Whitecaps

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is urging BC Place to make a deal with the Vancouver Whitecaps to keep them in the city.

“The City of Vancouver has done its part to create a path forward for the team’s future here by offering prime space at Hastings Park for the Whitecaps to construct a new stadium and entertainment district,” Sim said in a statement.

“Now, we face the difficult part.”

BC Place is owned and operated by the B.C. government.

“In order for the team to stay in Vancouver, the Whitecaps and Province must sign a bridge deal that will allow BC Place to become viable in the near term while a new stadium can be designed and built,” Sim said in the statement.

When asked on Tuesday about the possibility of buying the Whitecaps, Ravi Kahlon, B.C.’s jobs and economic growth minister, said the province wasn’t willing to do that.

“I’ve been getting messages from Whitecaps fans saying that B.C. should just give BC Place to the Whitecaps. The management has not asked for that,” he said.

“We’ve opened up our books. They see the numbers. They see we’re breaking even with the agreement that we have with them and at no time have they come forward and said here’s our proposal for that.”

Minister says B.C. government won't buy Whitecaps, but will help MLS team cut costs

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s government says it is working with the Vancouver Whitecaps to help the team lower costs and generate more revenue at BC Place — but it won’t be buying the Major League Soccer team to prevent it from moving cities.

Ravi Kahlon, B.C.’s minister of jobs and economic growth, says the team is now using the stadium at no cost, and any breaks that the team received this year could be extended for another year.

The Whitecaps and the provincial government — which owns BC Place through the provincial Crown corporation PavCo — signed a one-year lease earlier this year, which annually returns to the club about $1-1.5 million that the province makes from hosting.

Kahlon, a longtime season-ticket holder, says the province has also helped the team generate more revenue from concession sales and advertising, adding that the province is open to exploring other revenue sources.

The Athletic reported Monday that the league has told owners around the league that it is exploring relocation of the Whitecaps, with Las Vegas being the top candidate.

How are they going to makeup a $40 million USD shortfall even if you just cave in and give them every revenue source out of BC Place Stadium?

building another stadium is something that should have zero public money support when we have things already centralized downtown with big facilities that should easily have many decades of life left
