Interesting that BC Place wildly exceeded their revenue budget in 24/25. The preamble credits a number of sold out concerts.

If the Whitecaps' season meant better attendance for them, I'm sure there's an impact there too but it isn't mentioned.

Kahlon said there has so far been no request for government money to build a new stadium, but that the province is open to working with the team if that's the route they choose.
That's an interesting development. Both the Flames and Oilers new arenas had significant contributions from municipal and provincial governments, so why not do the same thing here.

Alberta likes handouts to Billionaires. BC NDP are not likely to give out the same offers.

That was discussed earlier but I guess the assumption that was a Taylor Swift blip.

I mean if we're giving out sports team handouts shouldn't it go to teams that bring in a lot of auxiliary revenue (at least 41 Canucks home games).

Because they have a perfectly good arena?

Bruno Mars is playing a record 4 shows at BC Place in 2026 - Oct 14, 16, 17 and 20.

2026 may see another blip.

Did we know about Swift more than a year before her shows? I can't recall.

Bruno Mars is here for a record breaking 4 nights in October. Not the same draw but that's huge if they are all sold out.

They were announced 11 months before the shows. I think all the concerts for next year have started to get promoted recently.

Crazy how Miami FC is building a brand new 1 billion dollar field. MLS is big business now and the whitecaps are starting to look bush league. When you compare franchises it doesn’t even seem like the whitecaps are in the same league. They’re like the New Orleans pelicans of the MLS

When did the Pelicans make the finals? Or even the conference finals? And while not apples to apples make it to a continental finals?

The Caps are an oddball in that they're actually a really good team on-field with strong fan support but terrible, stingy ownership.

They make the least revenue of any MLS team. The economics don’t work, team needs to go

Which makes you wonder, if Pavco makes a sweetheart deal with the Whitecaps, why wouldn’t big concert promoters ask for it too?

Apples and Oranges. The Whitecaps can threaten to move or work to build their own facility.

Taylor Swift doesn't tour in arenas, only stadiums. She has an interest in wanting to play in Vancouver, but can also skip it. It's a more reasonable negotiation IMO. She also sells way more tickets and there's more revenue opportunity than an average MLS game for Pavco.

This will be the most concerts BC Place has ever held in one year — eight!

AC/DC - August 13th
Noah Kahan - August 28th
Guns n' Roses - August 29th (smart to book back-to-back shows, they only have to build the stage structure once!)
Foo Fighters - September 20th
Bruno Mars - October 14th, 16th, 17th, 20th

They are only paying somewhere around maybe 300K a night in rent and can pull in 15-20+ million a night so it's not like they are going to try and nickle and dime PavCo.

“We are looking at a few things that we hope could be a game changer,” Schuster said Thursday. “A different stadium set up is obviously something we have been public about. We are still in the process there and seeing can that be a game changer and how quickly that would be a game changer if it could be a solution.

“Realistically, we probably need a lot of little steps and then maybe find one bigger step. And we’re working on that.”

The club is exploring several sources of revenue, including selling the naming rights for its training centre and for the playing field at B.C. Place, and is appealing to B.C.‘s corporate community for help, he added.

I think the first thing MLS and the Whitecaps should realize is that people don't really care that much about the Whitecaps.

Chip Wilson or Jimmy Pattison could purchase the team. If they wanted to make it a pet project or truly loved the team they could dump a ton of money into it and make it a world class franchise. But other than that it’s in a terrible financial situation and that’s partly due to the economic climate in Vancouver. World class city with world class amenities but the city and province isn’t going to fall over itself just to found a large part of the new stadium with public tax dollars. Some other cities will though

Yeah, how about they "work it all out" with their own money.
