That's gotta be one of the coolest skyline shots ever.

[QUOTE=Martin Mtl;9138068]Montreal on Instagram - 3rd week of December 2020 - part one - HERE

This might have been the first view I had as I stepped out onto the streets of Montreal for the very first time on a snowy day in January 1970.

Looks the same!

I really like your new 'format:' much more approachable and presents the volume better.

Great set as usual.

Christmas feels like even more of a climax this year since we're now back in (full) lockdown.

The famous parking bunker of Montreal's central station. Here's hoping that the rumblings I'm hearing about it's redevelopment into a 200m tower (or two) will come to fruition in 2020...

Those who know me know just how much I hate that parking bunker. I just don't understand how CN thought it was a good idea to build such a monstrosity, especially one that would go on to become the 'entrance' to the station.

That lot needs to be redeveloped, but the city really needs to be strict about accepting only a quality project on this location. And at max buildable height. It is such a prominent and highly visible spot in the middle of the skyline that we really need to hold out for a signature type building.

"OK" or "Mostly good" wouldn't cut it here, and I would rather this remains as is for another 10 years if it means the project is a great one.

Tibb's Eve (December 23; traditionally the first day of Lent when it was acceptable to drink; today it's the day you spend going out with your friends before spending the rest of the holidays with your family).

Christmas Eve.

Like most things in Toronto, it doesn't get built right the first time around. Dundas Square will be no different. Like you, I see the shortcomings of it but it's important to acknowledge that it's a process of incremental improvement. It's already better than it was when the area was rebuilt.

We'll see upgrades, more investment, better quality built into Dundas Square over the next 20 years. They'll eventually have to re-work that awful building on the northeast corner too. Dundas Square will get where it needs to be. Till then I'll appreciate it for the sensory overload that it already is. I'm glad that it's not just another block of city that makes little impression whatsoever. Love it or hate it, it's certainly not boring. And that's a label people love to pin on Toronto (and Canada).

I don't think it suits Montreal but I can't imagine Toronto without it. Tacky? Certainly, but I'm fine with a few blocks of downtown devoted to this sort of thing. Psychologically, Dundas Square has become the centre of the city. It's already one of the most photographed spots in the country.

It's one of the weird contradictions that kind of defines contemporary Toronto for me. Canada's flashiest intersection, showcasing Canada's most mainstream and unremarkable brands (I guess there's an argument to be made that they're some of Canada's most nationally successful brands, inherently making them seem more mainstream and unremarkable). Only the medium itself is special - the content is just normal ads for normal brands that you'd find at a mall. I've described Ontario as "aggressively normal" before and this is a big-time manifestation of that. I guess a big part of it is probably that it's intrinsically connected to the Eaton Centre.

Once in a while they seem to coordinate the screens (to honour local celebrities etc) and that's pretty cool.

What kind of ads are you expecting? The restaurants and retailers that have the money to buy 40 foot flashing advertisements don't tend to be independent or edgy.

And what is this "aggressive normal" that you speak of? Surely you realize that Ontarians have more dining options than Vancouver-based The Keg or Edmonton-based Boston Pizza.
