I would say the recent River Landing news is Saskatchewan news...not just Saskatoon and it is big and great news! There were concerns about Nutrien's intentions re: corporate presence in our Province, so this should alleviate those concerns.

BUT...there was absolutely no need for the juvenile comment by Regina Boi...can't we somehow learn to celebrate major developments on both threads...I get sick of the competition and comparisons.

Here’s hoping Harvard announces Hill Tower IV on the old Novia Cafe block sometime soon!

The building is still there yet, right? There are 17 empty lots in the downtown. It would be nice to see some development on some of those spots. Broad Street could use some development with the holes created by fires and the lack of much on the west side of Broad downtown too.

We already know Harvard wouldn’t be building around Broad and since they are obviously waiting to do something with the Novia block, ground floor restaurant retail is needed there to make that section of the square finally active.

I think it is going to be quite some time before we see any private investment going on to that side of broad. Realistically, that part of Broad street is pretty gross and run down. Unless a developer got an insanely good price on the land, it wouldn't make sense to develop there, especially in a stagnant market where it is unlikely that any other sort of improvements will occur around you for the foreseeable future. Besides - we all know Wascana Park is the city's new office park/downtown.

I honestly think the City should open up this area of Broad to surface parking lots to encourage knock downs of dilapidated buildings, while at the same time beginning to phase in a surface parking ban in the downtown proper (one spot lost for one spot gained). This would help to drive down the insanely high land values in the downtown to a point where residential development might once again become economically feasible, while at the same time preserve the required amount of parking needed to support the downtown workers needs.

The economy is in the tank and there's lots of vacancy downtown. Why would you think they'd build another tower?

I heard today that the Tartan Curling Club on Broadway is going to be shut down this year. Sounds like the Callie might be ripped down and replaced with a 16-sheet city-run rink in order to meet the needs of the community (currently has 10 sheets, or 12?).

Assuming that the Tartan building is torn down, that is a good spot for more residential and commercial infill in that area, hopefully something matching the aesthetic of Badham Blvd right to the north.

The curling clubs have been resisting amalgamating for years. Like the rinks at Cooperators, it would make much more sense to have one bigger facility.

Where would the funding come from?

I find the current trend of judging historical people by current standards tiresome, but ultimately I don't really care about renaming a school. So whatever.

However, surely the school board could have come up with a better name. But I guess they're scared that whoever they choose will end up being a monster in a century.

I like “The Crescents Elementary School”. Fits in the with neighborhood. Didn’t really like the name Davin anyways. Lol.

Yes, because Hitler was known local figure. Give me a break you false equivalence peddler. Davin is nowhere near the level of evil of Hitler.

Davin, whatever his faults and failures, was a prominent local figure who was very important for the city. Basically everyone from the past was wrong in some or many ways from today's standards. Education is far more important sweeping history under the rug and pretending these people never existed.

I think when judging historical figures you have to view them in the context of their time, as well as the context of our time.

For example:

Abraham Lincoln when viewed in the context of his time was very progressive. But in our time he would be considered an extreme social conservative who would be fine with racial segregation, would be against equal rights for gay people and women, etc.

However, ultimately Lincoln also undertook what we would still consider great acts for the benefit of others, and so is deserving of monuments despite his flaws. It would be different it he had also performed evil acts to counter the good.

For people like Davin it's much more of a mixed bag. After all, what great deeds did he perform? Helping to found local geopolitical entities? It's quite easy to counter that with what we would now consider bad character traits and beliefs. If he had also been responsible for greater things then I would have more sympathy for his legacy in the removal of his name from schools or other places.

Ultimately there is no correct answer for many people we name things after, and so the decision will be left to the decision-makers of our time, and future times. 75 years ago people wouldn't have really cared about having Confederate monuments in the South since segregation and racism were still very much alive (and the latter still is, obviously). But today people have decided that it is not right to celebrate people who fought to keep slavery alive, regardless if they were local heroes or not. The same decisions will be made for local Saskatchewan heroes. Eventually we may lose many or all of our historical icons to changing standards of morality, but that's okay—it means that society is continuing to become more tolerant and progressive.

I think it's important to remember these people like Davin existed, but not to celebrate them. Some statues should be kept, but in places like museums. History should be taught, but some parts shouldn't be celebrated, even if the people played important roles in getting us where we are.

Renaming Davin School as the Crescents School is very much in line with the way they named the new schools that opened last fall -- Ecole Harbour Landing School, Wascana Plains School, Plainsview.

Lol. It's school names named after the area they're in. Yes, how terrible. I demand an inquiry!

Yep too risky to honour historical, political or even school board figures. Who knows what might be considered offside in the future. Maybe people who ate meat or people who prosecuted cannabis users back in the 2010's will be considered horrible people in 50 years.
