Wow, this sure is proof of the size of those blocks.Tower 5 will add quite a bit from this angle. Anything between 1st and 2nd would make some major changes to the skyline.

I most definitely was NOT proselytizing. My comment in response was meant to be the opposite... the LDS church is a financial powerhouse and therefore immune is all I was saying.

The redesign on the Gallivan center plaza and a new building has been approved. Completion to be done by the summer!
I'm not sure about this design, I kind of wish there was no building there to block the view of the plaza from 200 south. But, this might turn out really well. The architects are the same ones that did the storefronts that are mostly vacant now that are along the alley road between the parking garage and the amphitheater building.

Mayor Becker is trying to get the public safety complex to be voted on again. The design of the complex was pretty nice, and I think it would be a welcomed addition to the east side of downtown. It would be located at the current location of the 10? story police building at 315 E. 200 S. Could someone dig up the design of the new complex. I know it was posted at one time. I tried googling for it, but I didn't find it.

I'm guessing the new ice rink will be 'at grade' so it can be covered to accomodate larger crowds for the stage? I kinda like the current bathtub design, and the fat goldfish that live there during summer months. The new building not only obstructs views into the plaza, it obstructs it with something fugly. It almost looks like it should be built out of cinderblock . I realize they're limited by the fact that the parking terrace is below, but I'd rather have no building than that atrocity.

I wonder if he'll have better or worse luck because of the economy.

I mean, on the one hand you can argue with the state and local governments cutting budgets, that the last thing you'd want to do is have to fire more people to pay for a building that could wait a few more years.

On the other hand, isn't this the type of building that could qualify for stimulus money from the U.S. Congress?

They really do need a new public safety building. I drive by the current one on my way home from work every day and it makes me sick every time I see - it is so trashy looking. It would be nice to see that eye sore torn down.

I like the redesign of the Gallivan Center. The grass were the new building will be is very under utilized at the present time anyway, so why not create more usable space in the form of banquet rooms etc, that can be used for corporate parties. While it does block some views from the street I think it is better than the blocked view that the row of porta potties create on that grass area at large events.

Providing more space for people to watch concerts and movies and an overall increase in the size of the Plaza during the summer, due to the at grade ice rink will truly benefit the city.

The Gallivan Center has really been one of the best things that the city has ventured into. It has created a community gathering place for all walks of life. I'm glad to see they are making improvements and updating it before it because dilapidated and under utilized. I look at it like this, it will be more cost effective to update the plaza and improve it while it is still in use, rather than attempt to recreate the entire plaza once it has become vacant.

The building is not an eyesore. With some upgrades (insanely costly), it could make a wonderful condo building.

Now that's an impressive debut. A newcomer to MF's annual list, the Utah capital jumped (or shall we say, slalomed) to the top of the survey because of its abundance of park space, athletically motivated residents, and below- average obesity rates. While the 2002 Winter Olympics host is known for its abundance of cold-weather activities, Salt Lake City is also athletically impressive away from the mountains.

The metro region ranks highest in our survey in participation in a number of activities, including beach volleyball, racquetball, aerobics, hiking, basketball, yoga, tai chi, swimming, cycling, running, and kickboxing.

"Outdoor recreation is simply a part of the lives of those who call Salt Lake City home," says Mayor Ralph Becker. "We have immediate access to the Wasatch Mountains, which offer some of the finest year-round recreation anywhere." The city's high amount of park acreage per capita (fourth best overall) may have to do with residents' lower TV viewing time, which is 23% less than average.

Becker works out every morning before biking or walking the one-mile route to his office. On weekends, he hikes or skis Utah's vast backcountry. As mayor of Salt Lake City, it's no surprise that Becker would take full advantage of the state's many natural outdoor resources. But he's not alone. More than half of Salt Lake City's residents rack up at least a half hour of exercise almost every day. For this reason, and many more, Salt Lake City earns the honor of being MF's Fittest City in America.

Utah state law limits or prohibits obesity-related lawsuits against food manufacturers and restaurants.

There are 22 percent more ice cream shops here than average, per capita.

My only problem with the whole Gallivan deal is that the grass near the stage just ends up being trampled to death after the first concert every year. They should just make it all... whatever it is. You're practically standing on hard dirt at the concerts anyway.
