Interesting design for the MUP next to the 22A offramp. Anyone know what the purpose of these concrete pads is?
I think they're just following the ministry guidelines for MUP design

Quote:
When a pathway is any steeper than 5%, flatter resting
areas should be provided at set intervals, depending
on the severity of the longitudinal grade. For pathways
with grades between 5% and 6%, a flatter resting area
of 3% or less should be provided every 100 metres. For
pathways with grades between 6% and 8%, a flatter
rest area should be provided every 50 metres. Where
a pathway has grades steeper than 8%, alternative
treatments should be explored, such as including
switch backs or locating the pathway along a route
with a flatter grade.

weird. the conc. pads are also level compared to the asphalt based on how the curb looks next to it. its a break in the slope i guess

I hope it's sloped for drainage.

Level areas for wheelchair users to rest?

I guess so. Never seen such before and seems a bit excessive. The will be a wheelchair using this path once a week - maybe.

Yes. If you look at the sidewalk on Royal Oak at Marine you'll see something that looks like mini speed bumps for a few blocks - it's to help people walk up the steep slope. There's enough of a slope on this for them to do a variation of the same thing.

Have the new signals been flashing amber? If they are, then the new signals and overpass should be ready to go once the final paving is done.

It seems like the paving is finished? Maybe they'll paint lines tonight?

EDIT: A bunch of trucks just showed up and parked on the new overpass.

Judging by the forecast, they have a rare weather window tonight to pave and apply pavement markings. Maybe today was the last day for the horrible Dollarton merge? Hoping!

The Main Street onramp is closed. The surface of the road seems wet so maybe it's a tack coat to finish paving.

Yep!!

I believe the signal is running at free flow (not adaptive yet), hence the backups on Dollarton. Once it's fully adaptive it will balance the demand better.

Twitter said the lights are short cycling so maybe there's a problem with the signaling.

Drove past the Main/Dollarton EB onramp (Didn't take it) and the horrible merge onramp is officially dead! Signals were in operation, but it looked like people were not respecting the red light and were treating it like a merge.

Looks like all is left is pavement markings, extend the jersey barriers, and adjust the signal. The Cut was flowing much better this morning. The real test is the afternoon.

It's actually been fairly light going to Vancouver eastbound in the mornings so I agree that afternoon should be the best test.

We are pleased to announce that we will be opening the new Main Street overpass to Highway 1 on October 19th. This will serve as a replacement to the Dollarton Highway onramp for traffic heading South onto the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge. This will improve the safety of traffic merging onto Highway 1 and will also improve the flow of traffic on Highway 1 heading towards Vancouver across the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge.

Please note that although the new bridge will be activated, there will still be ongoing construction in the following weeks. Please use caution and obey all signage and traffic control personnel in construction zones. The pedestrian sidewalk on the west side of the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge will also remain closed for a few more weeks

It might be nice if they stuck in a shoulder where the old onramp was for accidents etc

Main Street is pretty backed up for anyone trying to get onto the 2nd Narrows.

Ah but are the two through-lanes moving faster than they would be normally...

Too bad all us Highway One Improvements: North Vancouver / Ironworkers Memorial Approach forum dingbats can't meet up there at the site for a tour and a drink at the Lynnwood.
