YEG - Edmonton Int Airport

About 7 or so years ago, I used to work at sutton place hotel, and it wasn't until working there that I realized how hard it is to get to jasper for a tourist. Many business travellers would ask us the best way to get there short notice, and very rarely was there a way that fit their schedule, was reliable, and was cost effective.

On a positive note the New United Airlines Newark route starts today! The first flight is the inbound from EWR arriving this evening!

I could look back many moons ago when this route was announced, but that would take longer. I can't remember for the life of me, is it year-round or seasonal only?

Year round. In addition LHR moves to daily aswell as of today.

On another note a friends twitter account shows two USAF C-21's (military Lear 35's) at YEG yesterday. Apparently heading to Cold Lake today. A little early for Maple Flag but clearly for something...

I contacted IcelandAir myself via email to see if the "rumor" about YEG being a potential destination was infact more than a facebook rumor...

I sent this email sometime ago.

The response I recieved today?

Yes, YEG is being looked at "very closely".

Keep in mind if it does get launched in 2014 it will likely be seasonal service. YYZ also started as a seasonal route and was only recently made year round. This route makes perfect sense for YEG as its a one stop connection to Amsterdam and Frankfurt (two cities high on the YEG wishlist). Some in YYC may argue "why YEG"? YYC has sufficient service to LHR, AMS and FRA aswell as other European cities via both scheduled and charter service IMHO. YEG sits "untapped" and gives ICE access to those markets in one easy Reykjavik flight essentially cornering that market beyond AC's LHR flight. And if a Calgarian wishes to travel on Icelandair there are several connections available to YEG... (You had to know I was going to say that).

BTW the other Canadian city being looked at and may also be launched is YVR. Heres hoping for 2014!

Nah, I'd avoid the Edmonton habit and connect in SEA.

WestJet is revising planned Encore unit operation on Edmonton – Grande Prairie route. The airline remains on track to transfer 1 of 2 daily mainline operation to Encore from 15AUG13. From 15SEP13, overall service will be transferred to Encore, while increases from 2 to 3 daily.

Hahah... Seriously, I want to know what fraction of a percent of people have ever driven from Calgary to Edmonton to catch a flight somewhere. Maybe if they were headed to the north and Calgary didn't have the direct route?

My joke was more about taking a flight from YYC-YEG to connect to the possible Icelandair flight.

I wouldn't do the drive myself.

However this is a scenario where the eventual HSR between YYC and YEG could come into play in interesting ways.

Even as a born and raised Calgarian I could see myself taking HSR to YEG to go on Icelandair for a trip to visit Iceland.

The interchanges are "conceptual" as Alta Trans had no input. I question why the airport authority would not change the primary access into the airport. Given the future orientation of the terminal and the closest distrance between A and B, entering the site at hwy 19 seems to make sense.

Looks like (from 15Sep onwards) it will be 3 Encore flights versus 2 WJ flights.

3 x 78 = 234 on Encore
2 x 119 = 238 on WJ

More or less the same but more frequency which is better for customers giving them some more flexibility.

Westjet uses the 737-700 on all YEG-YQU flights. So those are 136 seats per flight.
