Just got this email from Porter today:

Now you can fly straight to P.E.I.

Our daily, non-stop flights to Charlottetown are now in the air. Fly from Ottawa to P.E.I - no layovers, no changing planes! In June, we’ll be offering two non-stop flights a day to Charlottetown, making it even easier to plan your travel to the island.

Book your flight today and enjoy fresh lobster, new potatoes, red sand beaches and relaxation this summer.

Stay tuned to your email, we’ll have more great news as our non-stop service from Ottawa continues to grow!

Today, Porter has 22 departures from YOW compared to Air Canada's 30. I wonder how much longer until we see Porter offer more departures than AC.

With AC abandoning YYG, downgrading seat numbers to YVR, and now decreasing YEG, it seems like they are succumbing to Porter with regards to service offerings in YOW. Too early to tell if this is the case but I'm happy it's opening up opportunities for Porter. Hopefully AC going to X67 from daily for YQB will help PD as well if they want to still serve the route down the line.

Today was PD's inaugural YYG-YOW flight and they simultaneously announced today that the route is going to be year-round instead of summer seasonal.

In winter the flight will operate daily. In summer's shoulder periods, the flight is operating 11x weekly and in peak summer, the route is twice daily.

I would love for Porter to start YOW-YYJ as part of their E195 expansion out of Ottawa. Taking F8 on the route in June but just status matched to Porter from WestJet and would love to try out their Embraer

I’ve been thinking for a while now that in a few years AC will only have flights to their hubs (YYZ,YUL and YVR) out of YOW (ignoring codeshares). This will probably upset all of the AC fanboys and fangirls on here, but I’m my mind, good riddance. I would take PD over AC any day, given the choice.

I can’t think of a single AC fanatic on here. Well, maybe one if the name is an indication, but everyone else seems eager for a viable replacement in Porter. Competition is good for the consumer in the end. We should be so fortunate.

I wonder if summer seasonal YLW would be viable as well, either for F8 or PD.

Flair tried Kelowna last summer but it only ran 1x weekly I believe.

Well that answers that I guess, YYJ is also 1x weekly this summer so hopefully it goes better.

I agree. I lost hope that AC will ever expand out of YOW so I go out of my way to avoid them and support other carriers that are more likely to introduce new route announcements in the future (Flair and Porter). I don’t even think we belong on AC’s “focus city” list anymore. With AF fulfilling my personal needs of Europe/Middle East and Porter fulfilling (when the time comes) my needs for Canada/US/Sun destinations, I won’t ever have a reason to use them.

A few photos that I meant to post here earlier:

Air Canada B777L landing on May 10:

Porter E295 landing on April 11:

Porter maintenance base construction as of April 11:
It's a lot further along now and is quite noticeable driving on Riverside if you look at YOW

Flew to BOS with Porter yesterday, probably one of the most pleasant flying experiences that I've had.

I went from the check in counter to the gate in less than 10 mins. The plane and staff were extremely nice as well, I'm very happy with Porter's service.

The flight, while not sold out, was fairly full, which gives me hope that this will be a successful route for Porter.

That's encouraging about it being fairly full.

Today's departure count: 68

Today's cancellation count (so far): 4 - 3 of which are WS. WS already have cancelled their two morning flights tomorrow.

@MountainView, nice pics. I saw the 77L when I was at YOW on Sunday. Noticeably bigger than the 767s from pre-March 2020 when looking from the 3rd floor.

I’ve always loved Porter. Even before they announced this whole expansion with new jets back in 2021. I wonder though, they don’t seem to connect much in YOW. For example, flights from YVR to ERW are not showing up as an option. Will this be temporary?

Could that have anything to do with the fact there's no sterile transit at YOW so minimum connecting times are much longer? If you arrive from YVR you have to exit the secure area, re-clear security and then go through US CBP Pre-Clearance. Not sure what the connection times are but maybe that's one reason?

YVR arrives at 15:22 and the EWR flight departs at 16:10 so under 50 minutes.

Interesting, I looked back at the original announcement and it was scheduled to arrive at 16:03 -- however the departure time from YVR remains the same. So maybe they are planning to enable connections on that route? The return EWR-YOW-YVR isn't well-timed at all though.
