There was a massive fire in downtown Lapeer yesterday, with the result being the loss of two historic buildings in the core downtown area along Nepessing St. I believe a neighboring third building was damaged, but has not been torn down yet.
Lots of videos and pictures out there on various news sites.
I know this is the wrong thread, but on the subject of fires there was a massive fire in downtown Calumet. About 3/4 block of historic buildings lost leaving dozens of residents homeless. Thankfully no serious injuries.

Oh no! I missed that too. If I'm not mistaken, that would be this block. Hopefully they rebuild (something). Worrisome, because I think Calumet does not have a lot of money these days.

The University of Michigan-Flint announced Friday that it has received federal funds for its $10 million Innovation and Technology Center on campus.
Funding for the project includes a $3.8 million CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The grant will be matched with $4.9 million from university donors, university officials said Friday.
The center, expected to open in 2023, will sit on the northwest side of the campus. A construction start date has not been set, officials said.
“Thanks to this grant, the new facility will have laboratories and classrooms designed for learning and creativity that are necessary for the future workforce of the state and region,” Chancellor Deba Dutta said in a statement. “UM-Flint takes pride in its mission as a regional public university, and as such, this building will serve as a nexus for technology, education, and industry partnership, where community members and businesses are encouraged to be active participants in the innovation ecosystem.”
^ Nice! Looks like it would sit north of the William S. White Building, home to the School of Health Professions and Studies. I like seeing the campus grow that way, to balance out the north side of the Flint River with some more activity.

Residents are right to be skeptical because of previous deals that have fallen through. The interested buyer this time - New York-based Ashley Capital - has prior experience & success working with the Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response (RACER ) trust. So, there's that. But there is a lot that needs to be done before any deal would be finalized, including remediation of 60 more acres of land. The developer-investor is currently in the "due diligence" phase, with no known timeline or details about the deal or the potential development. The most likely use would be redevelopment as an industrial park.
