Bentall 5 is such a nice tower. Clean, modern and simple.

Homsense

A very large Homesense sign has gone up at the entrance to the building at Robson and Richards. Imminent opening?

^It (Bentall 5) actually stands out among the skyline highrises when seen from the Harbour Centre Lookout. Very sleek and modern -- and perhaps underrated on this forum due to its height (or lack thereof).

I've heard it opens in March. Residents are to begin occupying the tower in a few weeks, too.

Today I was pleased to discover: the last undeveloped lot now has a development application on it. Looks like a nice project too - there was a rendering posted next to the Dev. Application (they are actively looking for retailers). The lot is across the alley from Brava, so it's near the bridge end.

At last! Granville will be complete! And the quality of the developments is definitely improving. Bye bye skanky XXX shops and bad 99c pizzas, hello decent businesses.

Granville Mall changing again
Jan, 28 2008 - 10:30 PM

VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - Significant rent hikes are changing the face of the Granville Street Mall.

Charles Gauthier with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association says the rent changes are bringing in franchise and brand-name businesses versus smaller operations independently owned.

He says it's meant a positive change and who the changes attract, "A lot of positives regarding Granville Street in terms of new businesses arriving as well as properties being redeveloped."

With completion of the Canada Line Granville will see more changes with improved landscaping and other features.

^On a related note, I think it's time to get the buses off of Granville Mall for good. Otherwise, it's not a real pedestrian mall.

If they do want to reintroduce buses onto Granville, then I say reintroduce all forms of traffic. Open it right up. But I'm not in favour of some kind of buses-only compromise.

Saw that last night - I guess I was a bit hasty in my comment that the steel grid looked good. That HomeSense sign is too big, it's HUGE! (4x bigger than the IGA sign)

**********

The whole Granville Mall renovation project was originally spearheaded by businesses who wanted to get cars back on the mall. Studies showed that it wouldn't work with the buses, so we ended up with the "modified existing" plan.
Personally, I think it could work as a pedestrian mall now that there's a so many people living close by.

Wow, granville is going to look incredible. I hope they dont go too sterile with it though, all that minimilasm can have a negative effect sometimes.

I like the creative bollards, bike racks and such though. All in all i have high hopes.

WRT Granville, the staffers at the open house seemed open to the idea of keeping the street trees in place - primarily for the north of Georgia segment and even for the 800 block (in front of the Commodore). The event space will be devoid of trees - permanently - so having the mature trees to the south would help bookend that event space and add continuity from the north.

Of note at the Acton Ostry website -

- Under "multi-family residential" - rendering of 999 Seymour - modern yellow and blue/green glass facade; and
- Under "commercial" - two-storey restaurant at the edge of Harbour Green Park - using similar looking glass curtain wall as 999 Seymour.
- Under "educational" - UBC projects

The renderings show the Granville Street trees in 2012 because they'll be EVEN SMALLER when they plant them in 2008/2009.

WOW! I'm loving those plans for Granville, thanks for posting them!
The great white way sounds great, and I am happy to hear they are considering projections/videos for the Sears wall

^ world's longest urinal, anyone? they look awesome btw, i'm surprised about what is being proposed for Granville. it looks awesome, but i don't understand why all of it can't be done by 2010.

It would be our version of what Torino did:
