I thought this might be the site

WorkSafeBC is investigating after a crane in downtown Vancouver was damaged, disrupting traffic on Thursday morning.

The cause of the damage isn't yet known, but footage of the crane shows a section that appears to be bent.

The crane is at Howe and Drake streets downtown on a site operated by Onni Group.

Staff experienced issues with the crane on Thursday morning during a routine safety check, said Onni Group chief of staff Duncan Wlodarczak.

"As a precaution to ensure the safety of all site staff and nearby vehicle traffic and pedestrians, the site was immediately shut down," he said in an emailed statement.

"The street was closed until a full assessment of the crane could be completed."

Wlodarczak said the company notified the City of Vancouver as soon as the damage was discovered. Safety officers with WorkSafeBC are investigating.

"The site and road will reopen once it is confirmed the crane and the area is safe," said Wlodarczak.

I can explain exactly what happened, no math involved. Take a closer look at the picture, the heel of the Jib is what buckled, but only on the left side just in front of the cab. On Luffer cranes, the jib can boom up and down via the luffing cables that run from mast to the pendant to the tip of the crane. In the picture you’ll notice two smaller boom stop cables running from the mast to the jib, they are supposed to be equally slack unless fully boomed down. The left cable is clearly taught and hung up on something at the exact point where the Jib buckled, while the right cable is slack. This is a total fluke, and would have happened during the night when the jib is boomed all the way up and the boom stop cables are hanging at their lowest. When the operator went to test his limits in the morning, he started booming down, the cable got hung up, and he probably shit his pants.

That could have been so much worse.
Does anyone know what operation they were doing when it happened?

If this had happen with a load in full flight, would the operator have trust in the remaining 2 horizontal bars on the jib to safely lower down (land) the material?
