15th St Construction

Wow, they're saying the street construction btwn MLK and 15th scheduled to be completed by Dec '14:

http://buildingatx.com/2013/11/what-...ical-district/

Arrows in the attach (pg 20) below show a hard dogleg at 15th. That sucks. Longterm, is the plan to straighten out RR extend further south of 15th, or is that a repurpose of the existing drive cutting through Brack? Don't understand pages 18-20:

Long-term, I think the plan is to demolish Brackenridge and replace it, as seen in the image below:

The road will go straight through what they replace Brackenridge with.

Other than site plans with place holders for structures, I do not think any actual "renderings" are available. Furthermore, if I am not mistaken, they (the med school stakeholders) are still trying to get the height restrictions either lessened (i.e., providing the ability to build taller structures) or removed completely.

I thought UT being part of the State of Texas were/are allowed to do just about anything they want! Are they just playing nice now and following the codes of Austin? They do need to be allowed to build a cluster of medical buildings taller and save some land for unknown future needs.

Outside of CVC restrictions which are state law, I also thought they could do whatever they damned well pleased without spending any time entertaining City of Austin officials.

Better to get rid of the height restrictions so they can go up and save the land for more open space. A lot of people are still fuming about them changing Red River and fiddling with the park.

Where is that "like" button? I second your thoughts, Kevin.

Agreed, there are already plenty of high rises on campus. There are some nice green spaces around there we could lose if we see 20 3 to 6 story buildings.

Did anyone go to..... or have info on... the public meeting on the Med School this week.?
Also, anyone heard just where the Tennis center will go.
Or real info on what will replace the Erwin Center.... and where that will go?
Speculation aside, I am curious as to what UT has planned. ( Can't imagine a move this big would not already have solutions for moving such a large facility!)

Yes please if anyone knows about the Erwin center replacement please chime in. We go there for basketball games and find the facility very adequate from our cheap seats POV.

The Erwin Center is gone no matter what. 7 to 10 years remaining life with that facility, buildings are already being planned for that plot.

Hope they find a replacement site soon

I was expecting it to be larger. Seems a bit small for UT's main campus. I'm not saying Houston Medical District size or anything like that but somewhere in between.

The Texas Medical Center is truly massive and Austin simply won't be able to come anywhere close to that. Besides, this is still phase 1.

Eventually, I imagine we could see additional hospital buildings on nearby land over time: maybe a cancer hospital, a women's hospital, a neurological/neurosurgical hospital, an out-patient surgical center, etc. Also, with phase II and phase III we'll see more research labs and medical buildings.

There's the rub. We all know the Eriwn has been "planned out". BUT what hasn't been revealed is the plan to replace it.
Can't imagine they left that out of the "master Plan"…. the replacement is too important to the University and the City.
I would bet money UT already has a plan, they just arn't playin that card yet.
It will be interesting to see this "phase" unfold.

I trust Patterson, a basketball guy, and a guy that helped get Reliant Stadium built, will come through.

Actually, Patterson alluded to the possibility that the Erwin Center would be torn down within five years in a recent Q&A with Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com. The University is already looking at potential sites for a new arena.

Is Brakenridge in a CVC? I believe it is part of phase 2 and will be torn down.

Central Health seeks ideas for Brackenridge campus

Central Health is soliciting proposals from planning and development consulting firms on possible uses of the University Medical Center Brackenridge facility, which will go out of use as a hospital once Seton Healthcare Family opens its new teaching hospital as part of the Dell Medical School campus.

What do y'all think?

The Education and Administrative Building is interesting with it's distinctly different designs on each side of the building. I like it.
