FRom the Courier - the stained glass windows were demolished because it would have been too expensive to move them (to the new Cineplex at Marine Drive Gateway):

As of Sunday part of the theatre was still standing (my photo). Apparently Cineplex reneged on their promise to remove the stained glass window, so it was destroyed. The first time I've been at a demo where a stranger walked up and initiated a conversation, that went something like "can you believe this bullshit, they tore it down for more condos".

Did you ask the stranger how many times they went to the Ridge?

The Ridge didn't get torn down due to lack of business. I frequented it quite often and it certainly did okay attendance wise. Concession sales would never compare to a multi-plex though. The writing was on the wall as soon as a developer bought the building.

It seems to be at a stage of low intensity excavation. Once the old building was demolished, I was surprised by the good mountain views even at street level.

I've been by the site recently, but never with the opportunity for a picture it seems. The crane has been installed and excavation continues. The project across the street is just about finished.

I'm less excited about this project because of what was lost and better or more significant recent redevelopments in the area. Maybe the new grocery store will be really nice.

I'm more looking forward to the completion of The Ridge to see what Larco moves forward with at the nearby Arbutus Shopping Center. Since the 2011 rezoning other malls and movie theater events were Famous Players purchasing Dunbar and Fifth Avenue, cinema closure at Oakridge and Ridge, Oakridge rezoning, Brentwood Town Center rezoning Marine Gateway construction, redevelopment of Safeway on Granville, sale of Safeway to Sobeys, entrance of Target, Nordstrom and other American anchor brands, etc..

Last edited by Genauso; Mar 29, 2014 at 11:54 PM. Reason: added arbutus mall rezoning reference

Be nice to get some newer pics up if someone is around the area. I'll update it to u/c. Figure it's safe to assume they've poured concrete.

Lol well if there is a crane up then you can bet they have poured concrete (most likely). It seems different that the crane is off on basically the sidewalk and not down in the pit

Just starting to pass ground level now.

Of the Ridge's former parking lots, the one to the north is now advertised for sale as two 50x125 ft lots zoned as RT-7 (townhouses?). Across the road from the development, to the east, is:
- former Ridge parking lot, current display centre
- an old RBC branch poised for redevelopment
Wave of new square footage should continue to roll onward unless the market changes.

From Broadway/9th to 16th along Arbutus has very quietly built-up in the last decade. I don't know why some commenters here would label the west side as a nest of NIMBYs, things really seem to move ahead more smoothly there and in my opinion some of the nicest neighbourhoods are now on the east side (parks, roads, trees, community centres, transit, stores, restaurants).

I remember being shocked once when I walked from Broadway to King Ed and decided to take a side street instead of walking along Arbutus about the amount of condo buildings along that stretch. The area from Broadway until 16th is full of apartment buildings up to about about 8 stories instead of single-family housing. That's one of the reasons it annoys me so much when people call that area the 'creme de la creme.' Those are completely middle class dwellings.

That pocket is the former Carling OKeefe Brewery lands (NW corner area @ 12th & Arbutus) and has expanded from that.

A quick shot from the back of the bus today. Slow but steady progress. They are working on the third floor now.

Thanks for the update! It's been ages since this has had a photo taken of it, so this is a pleasant surprise.
