The piling to the east along Race Track Rd is likely for the hotel or apartment building that have both long been proposed for the site. The hotel proposal goes back to the days Target had plans to build there.

On the west side, this is the layout. Seems like another big box type going in there. But I don't think we were ever sure who it was.

7 months in and besides Southwest Winnipeg it appears construction of new builds has significantly decreased throughout the rest of the city. What's a bit more worrying for me is the amount of single-family houses we are still constructing the ratio needs to be far less then 32% if we don't want to bankrupt the city going forward with our continuous urban sprawl.

Have any of the 14 or so mayoral candidates even so much as discussed urban sprawl? Because our next mayor needs to end new greenfield development so that we can start acting like a major city and build a lot more infill.

It is weird seeing the Winnipeg Building Permits down so much. At least to the end of June, the rest of Canada was still 13.9% YoY in permit volume: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/da...ts_summary.pdf

So the new replacement house alone will cost $4 million?
The lost would be worth 1/2 mill? Demolition costs? Cost of what the house was, 2 mill?

What a tragic loss. With the 2 most glamorous homes, 1021 and 1015 being replaced with Cement boxes, mini Ikea style homes, the street has lost most of the spectacular homes slowly but surely.

Can someone explain why architects love designing cement boxes so much (and the rich who buy them) love them so much?

Can someone further explain why it seems taboo to build architecturally beautiful buildings?

I know the young couple that purchased it just prior to covid put videos on
Youtube professing their love for the historic, distinguisehed character home, pledging & promising to restore back to its original grandeur.. Lies.
Must be nice to have $7 millions + demo costs..
Some smartasses will say well, if u liked it so much why didn't you buy it?
So, here is the thing..if u do not appreciate something like this, leave it for someone else to enjoy. No, they will outbid you just because they can...... This is just a flagrant disregard for others that would appreciate this historic beauty that it was and that persons flaunting their wealth to do whatever they want where ever.
The 514 Wellington cr fiasco was another travesty. Wealthy lawyers shoiwng us what monet can do. Destroy what they do not like to attempt a build what is innapropriate for the area and like it or lump it. SO far the residents have been against any proposal. I do not blame them one bit. i live near there. The city has no teeth.

I don't know. I like the idea of heritage protection for things like the Exchange District, but does that mean that every house of a certain age throughout the city should be protected?

It's not like these old Wellington Cr mansions are getting replaced with Money Marts. There are big and beautiful homes going up on those sites.

Nothing lasts forever.
