While the points may have been made in a condescending way, it doesn't reduce the validity of the points. Personally, I find Rogers Place to be very aesthetically pleasing but also find modern urban design in general to be leaving a lot to be desired. Just the other day Jan Gehl was criticizing urban design in new parts of Copenhagen and calling for more Jane Jacobs-like thinking. All that being said, I think it is an issue we are seeing in Calgary and Toronto in addition to the ICE District.

I like the last two photos. They really show how the profile of the city will change for those people driving southbound on Highfield Street. A real urban landscape is starting to develop.

The building is also beginning to fill in, with the partial installation of the pre cast seating sections and the installation of some interior partitions.

This is great to see. I didn't realize that this had progressed so far (actually, I didn't realize that it had been approved).

I assume the Moncton Coliseum will be kept as it is?

The Moncton Coliseum will be retired as an arena and the seating removed.

The Coliseum part of the Coliseum/Agrena complex will be repurposed as a community field house, but will do double duty with the Agrena as an expanded trade show space. Combined, it will easily be the largest trade show space in Atlantic Canada.

Absolutely incredible! I still wish Zinc could have been used as the exterior cladding, but the stainless steel looks a lot better than I was expecting. Maybe in a couple decades when the building is due for some refreshments and modernization, they'll re-clad it in zinc to give it a little bit of a face lift.

Regardless, there's no question in my mind it will age well. And as of now, it's, by far, the nicest sporting facility in the country and one of the nicest on the continent.

There are no other large scale stadiums in Canada being built. So it is literally in a class of its own in terms of the nicest under construction right now.

Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton seats around 60k. I wouldn't really compare NMS to the new arena in Edmonton (cap. 18,641) shown above if that is what you are trying to do, although they are both "sports infrastructure" they are very different beasts and the Arena's budget is also $200 million more than NMS's.

It's a completely inward facing development that turns its back on the street with the oversized bridge/plaza. The carbuncle community rink adds to the already immense block. I guess an arena isn't exactly easy to fit into a downtown type urban fabric though. This master planned community around the arena just looks so generic and not very pedestrian friendly. Dime a dozen here in Toronto but, I guess, for an Edmontonian, it's still a novelty.

Are there any examples of arenas that aren't inward-facing though? I would think they would be in the extremely small minority. Offhand, I can think of one under construction that will attempt to alleviate this problem - the new arena in Detroit will apparently have outward facing retail/businesses which should liven up the periphery of the arena when they are no events taking place at there. Maybe this will be a trend for the future

So the poster makes a observation that appears to have some validity and that's your response. You do realize that most arenas tend to be dead zones as there is no reason to be there outside the five or so hours - before, during and after - the event is taking place. It's one of the common criticisms of arenas. Maybe Detroit's model with business on the outer walls of the arena structure will create a more continuous street life drawing people to the arena itself 12 - 16 hours per day, 300+ days per year rather than 5 hours per day, 200+ days per year.

^ MTS Centre did a reasonably good job of trying to integrate itself with the urban fabric... there's a Jets Gear store, a Moxie's Restaurant and until this year, a Tim Hortons and Subway franchises (they actually turned part of the concourse into restaurant space during the day), along with being part of the skywalk system.

On one hand I wonder why OSEG didn't try doing something like that, but then again, 104 Av has a bit of a stroad thing going on and it's not really a street that gets high volumes of pedestrians.

Rogers started off hot and heavy with the renos with the expanded concourse, new scoreboard and the electronic wall in the outfield in the mid 2000s. After that it seems like the renos tailed off. The only recent renos I can think of are the new centrefield standing room section and the dirt infield.

If Toronto wants the All Star game, Rogers Centre will require several major upgrades. If the most of the seats in the stadium have not been replaced since the stadium's inception start there. If they are as narrow as I have heard with complaints from a few sources, then widen them. They will lose some seats but the trend in baseball seems to have been towards slightly smaller stadiums with a 40 - 45,000 capacity.

They also need to reduce the 150 suites to a more manageable number (maybe 50 - 75?) as I hear many sit empty. Update the suites they want to keep and turn the others into loge seating/club seating. and take down most of the windows on the 300 and 400 levels to allow improved interaction with the rest of the stadium.

One common refrain I hear is Rogers needs to do something about the tired concrete look. While I agree, I'm not sure how they go about this. Do they cover the exposed concrete in the interior bowls with wood or some other material? How would this look? Would it improve the esthetics of the stadium or would it look tacky and unconvincing like a person with bad plastic surgery?

I would like to see some reno of the retractable roof itself. Some have suggested a translucent material. I'm not sure if the expense would allow that to be feasible.

I have given up on the idea of a 100% grass field as I have heard the costs are non-viable.

Any word on what the player's facilities are like in the dome. Do they need upgrading or are the current with respect to others in the league?
