I can't speak too much for the cladding of the Moncton Events Centre, but there will be a fairly large amount of glass, and the lower portion of the exterior I think will be a mixture of brick and tile. The crown however does appear to be metal, so your point is well taken.

Monctons still has a decent sense of place I just thought it's funny the top portion picked up on the fad.

These types of design trends are just a sign of the times... it's hard to find an arena that is completely detached from the other buildings of its era.

The renderings for the Moncton rink are oddly low-res, but I think it looks good. It should be a nice anchor to the western end of downtown.

Rogers Place clearly went all in on that design trend, but I think it looks good. It looks like a proper part of the urban fabric.

I would say rogers place is about as detached from it's current surroundings as you can get but at the same time it's surroundings will change drastically over the next 2-6 years it will fit right in to the glass jungle theme. In any other setting I would say that it ages horribly. The closer it gets to finished the more I'm questioning the exterior finish but I'm sure when stantec and the rest are up it will look 50X better then it already does

I don't know if it's just the filter but this picture looks like it was taken in the mid 80's and you can see how rogers place could age quick. Actually from here it just looks like a shiny rexal lol

^ It's detached from its current surroundings because it's surrounded by construction. However, the building fits its block quite well and has a good presence at the sidewalk. The only concern I have is whether there will be any interaction with the street - those big stickers that went up the other day are a bit worrisome if they end up being permanent, hopefully there will be a few entrances and perhaps a CRU or two. If the assumption is that everyone enters via skywalk/winter garden, then yeah, it won't be ideal.

Rogers Place is stunning!!!

I can't help but think that they could have done so much better with the community arena. It just looks so tacked on.

It's about time Canada built a nice looking arena. The Richmond Oval is beautiful but Edmonton's is the first hockey/basketball arena in Canada that's more than some functional box. Well done!

Jays are 4th in MLB attendance this season averaging nearly 41,000 a game. Things look much nicer with the dirt infield now let's get some grass in there.

Yep. It's all flash. It's certainly not great architecture and materials are questionable.

It's a completely inward facing development that turns its back on the street with the oversized bridge/plaza. The carbuncle community rink adds to the already immense block. I guess an arena isn't exactly easy to fit into a downtown type urban fabric though. This master planned community around the arena just looks so generic and not very pedestrian friendly. Dime a dozen here in Toronto but, I guess, for an Edmontonian, it's still a novelty.

What exactly is the issue with Rogers Place? Obviously it's designed to funnel people through the Ice District development, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing... if there are going to be shops and restaurants there, they'll need the Rogers Place crowds to support them.

It looks like there will be some interaction with the street... what would really make it is if there was something beyond just arena entrances at grade.

Among Canadian arenas, Rogers Place looks like it'll be one of the better ones from a perspective of integration with its surroundings.

The stadium does look better when it's filled and the dirt infield doesn't hurt either. However, talk of grass at Skydome has pretty much ceased since Shapiro took over. From what I've heard, it's a very complicated and expensive proposition and that, as opposed to Beeston, it may not be a priority for him. Other upgrades to the stadium are on the horizon, though.

That's too bad but understandable. One "improvement" that they've done that I dislike is ring all the facade in blue. I liked the cement, now it's just blue absolutely everywhere with nothing to break it up.

Talking the cement rings between decks. Compare with the pic above.

I also liked the look of the Windows restaurant but in terms of atmosphere what's there is better now.

#1 The richmond oval is hardly even an arena/event centre

#2 Videotron, ACC, CTC, Rogers arena, and bell centre ect are functional boxes? Get out of here

The only major Arena in Canada that was built as a "functional box" was MTS centre and it was built for 130M for an AHL team. It's now being dressed to fit the NHL and has lost the "functional box" stigma

Skydome really is a good place to watch a game - as long as the attendance is about 28k+. The blame for bad atmosphere isn't with the stadium, it's with the lack of fans. It may not rank up there with most ballparks in the league, but Jays fans are certainly enjoying the atmosphere - especially when the roof is open. As we've already seen this year, a half-full BMO field still leaves a lot to be desired.

Nice to see Rogers having success with the Jays.

The old turf looked like sh*t. The new turf looks just about as sh*t. I don't understand why they can't do better.

Rogers has stumbled upon a goldmine in the Jays. Big attendance numbers. Big viewership numbers. Lots of merch getting sold. Let's see if Rogers does the right thing and invests in the Jays like the big-market team it is.
