They need to clarify this remark. I can't imagine them wanting to bulldoze the Main Street portion of the Tribune building, or any of the historic facade originals on that east side of Main. That would be unacceptable.

I don't get the Hyatt at Gateway. It's one of the best vacation spots in the city -- just step out the door and you're in one of the city's biggest destinations. Why build this 4-story thing that looks like it could fold up in an earthquake like it's made of cards? It looks like a motel in Levan. They should have built something bigger. Forty stories would be nice, but that's the wrong scale. Why not 15 or twenty stories? You could stretch the height a little because it's actually at the edge of the development.

That's what I notice as well and now it got me worried. They would be idiots if they would bulldoze a historic building right on main.

It's going to be 6-stories, but I do agree that the building itself looks weak and that it all could blow over if there was high winds.

I'm hoping that once Hyatt opens their two small hotels. ( Here in Salt Lake and in Sandy ) They will see what great business it brings in and they will want to build a bigger Hotel.

The thought of the Tribune building being demolished makes my stomach churn. No doubt a performance center on Regents street will be a welcome sight, but I just don't think its wise to destroy the very elements that make the location 'artsy'.

The loss of the Tribune Building would be a catastrophe for downtown. It has some wonderful detailing on the tower portion, though it's long lost it's charm on street-level. The vacancy of this building has been a sucking wound in this area of downtown; I'm still angry at the Tribune for moving to The Gateway. That said, I think this property would make a great adaptive re-use project. Retail and condos would be very successful here, especially after the theater and CCC opens.

As far as that side of Main Street goes now, there are precious few 'facade originals'. To the north of the Tribune Building (isn't it officially called the Ezra Thompson Building now?) everything is pretty much blighted and vacant, save the interior of the MUAH building. To the south of the Tribune Building, it's patchwork; one building is awesome, the next is a wreck or vacant, and so on.

I doubt very much that Mayor Becker would let anything happen to the Tribune Building

I love this vantage point Steve. I always look forward to your pics from up at the University.

I've found that Salt Lake City is one of the most difficult metros when it comes to deciding where to plant trees around your yard. I'm a tree hugger, so trees are a must. But you really have to consider how big the tree's will become and if they will block the jaw dropping views.

But why should Salt Lake have to show or prove that they can indeed, handle a large scale Hotel??? We can dammit!!! Let Sandy,Ogden,Provo an even St.George build up the 6-7, even 10-12 story hotels. Salt Lake does'nt need to be slapped in the face with these subpar Hotels.We as a forum should stay on the Chamber of Commerce,Government officials, and Hotel chains to get some hieght,an beauty in our downtown. Someone could really put a footprint in this Damn town!!! Holding had the idea with the Grand, But the location puts it a little out of reach for anything "hop-skip-an a jump away", from shopping an entertainment........UUGH!!!!!

Well I know Salt Lake City can support a large scale hotel. But coming from the Hyatt's point of view I think they are just testing out the market here by building smaller hotels. I am confident that once they see what a great market salt lake has, plus the fact that Salt Lake City is NOW the hub for two merging airlines that will attract more business and visitors to our state. It will only increase the demand for larger hotels in the downtown areas.

Projects: I don't know what is up with the lack of large hotels in SLC. Sure seems like SLC could support one (or possibly more) convention-style hotels in the CBD. Does anyone have any data on occupancy-rates for CBD hotels, especially as those hotels compare with hotels from other metro CBD's? I don't understand why a prime piece of real estate goes for a Motel 6 with the Hyatt nameplate (You'll know what I mean when the hotel is opened.)

Had my first experience with a W Hotel this weekend. My daughter wanted to celebrate her 21st birthday in Atlanta with two childhood friends who grew up with her in SLC. They all met at Hartsfield-Jackson and I took them to the W Hotel in Midtown, who has great weekend rates because of freeway construction in the area. The hotel is ultra modern and very European. The young ladies had such a great time at the hotel, they basically spent the weekend at the hotel--which is exactly the kind of hotel SLC needs, not another drop-your-suitcase-and-open-up-your-laptop kind of hotel.

That actually is quite funny. I am a Utah Jazz Season ticket holder, and I can tell you that right now auctioning of Utah Jazz tickets aren't going for much. Its too early in the season, not high enough demand yet. Also it doesnt help any that people are cutting back on spending.

I like that layout, UB...hopefully the final design will include a residential tower of some kind, and get some (occupied) retail on Main Street too. They should include some kind of cafe or restaurant on Main as part of their final design.

I went downtown for lunch today and parked in the new garage on Social Hall Ave. I'm glad they finished it before the holidays as it will provide some much needed parking around temple square. As far as parking garages go, its a pretty nice one.

Also, it provides a nice location to spy on construction of the OC Tanner building from above:





Basically, we found that there is almost nowhere to eat on the north end of downtown. The Subway on 100 S. had a line out the door and down the street. Plenty of shuttered storefronts, but nowhere to eat. Its a shame that none of the eateries from the old ZCMI foodcourt moved into some of the vacant spaces on and around main street.

There was a sign in the lobby of the Eagle Gate bldg. that announced the opening of a "mini food court" in November.
