I guess this is where the 'your mileage may vary' comes in... to me party decks and a stadium app are 'who cares' things.

As for wind, it's practically a non-issue at IGF compared to the old place where it swirled around non-stop. So again, we're talking about marginal differences.

The LED lighting and larger concourses sound pretty good, though.

The whole LED thing doesn't really have any affect on the fan experience as of now (please spare me the video of the soccer stadium blinking. It's a useless gimmick when you think about it) and these are things that IGF will have eventually. It also wont be long untill IGF has more balconies /loge seating ect. If it was designed post 2013 it would have had more but either way it has a ton of room to build more.

The lines on the turf look horrid and unprofessional. As a CFL fan, the field is a highly disappointing development.

Yeah, fair enough...maybe the LED lighting isn't such a big deal.

Concur about not giving a damn about the soccer lines.

There's no way we can seriously compare the two stadiums until we actually see NMS in action. But for me, atmosphere is a big part of what makes a venue great, and I've got a feeling team green will win on that front.

Atmosphere is going to be pretty strongly correlated with whichever team is doing better at the time. Look at Ottawa... the Toronto Star called it the best gameday atmosphere in the league last week... surely the team's on-field success has done a lot to stoke that.

I think some people are comparing the two stadiums based on fan experience while others are comparing it based on strictly structure/ technological advances.

Actually, 68% of the seats are below grade.

NMS has 9 elevators vs. IGF's 4. NMS possesses standby power generators in the event of power outages. (Maybe IGF does as well.) In any case, it just goes to show that the two smallest CFL cities in Canada have fantastic facilities in their own right.

I'm not sure if it is the same in North America but a lot of the new stadiums in Europe tend to lack the atmosphere of the grounds that they replaced. Contemporary architecture can be a bit sterile.

Good point. The old Winnipeg Stadium had good atmosphere but some of it was lost due to the fact that both ends were wide open (well, one end had a small grandstand but it was still pretty open). I've noticed the same thing at Taylor Field. When you take into account the crappiness of the WBB team since moving into IGF, I'd say that the atmosphere is better at IGF than at the old venue and that's in large part due to the stadium design with seating around the field instead of concentrated between the goal lines.

There is something to be said for a bowl or U-shaped grandstand. I find that it enhances the overall atmosphere. I think in the case of Europe many of the old stadiums being replaced already had stands surrounding the field, so they already had that intimate feeling.

^ I wonder how many people come from out of province for the Grey Cup anyway... I mean, I'm sure the number is significant but the crowd must be dominated by locals. I recall watching the game in 2013, it pretty much looked like any other Riders home game.

A World Cup would probably result in far more out of town visitors. Last year the WWC soaked up every hotel room in Winnipeg and surrounding area, mainly on the backs of US fans who came to watch their team's group stage games.

Well, one of the Russian cities hosting a group stage for the 2018 WC (Saransk) has about 290,000 people...

It does not appear to be a "Hamilton" type of city, i.e. very close to a much larger city.

Interesting... they're building a pretty impressive stadium for what is in Russia a smaller sized city. Don't ask me about the Canadian flag down there.

I wonder why they picked Saransk?

1995 Grey Cup in Regina was a shit show for out of towners seeking accommodations. I know, I was there watching the Baltimore Stallions win the Grey Cup!!
