I recollect that there were horse stalls down there (at Cityplace) originally, for Eaton's delivery services. At least I was told that once and I'm sure it would make sense because they would have had to load up for deliveries somewhere and the basement would have been ideal given that they were storing, producing and packaging so many different items on the upper floors.

It would make sense for TNSE to build their own parkade to bring in even more revenue on game days. Right now it's all going to other companies in the area. Considering parking has been around $15 on game days, it's nhot surprising. The higher revenue could help offset the additional cost of the parkade (due to ground conditions).

I'm sure they have a solid business case for it, as it seems TNSE/Longboat has for everything they do.

On another note, work continues on site like a bunch of busy bees. Seems to be focusing on the northern end, along all the streets. Drill rigs in action with concrete trucks coming at a steady pace.

Longboat parkade at Donald and St. Mary?

I kind of hope not, but considering the amount of development taking place around there I could see the need for such a thing emerging eventually.

And to your other post, with all the activity around there it appears that absolutely nothing is happening on the former Carlton Inn site, so I guess development there is still potentially a long way off?

Sorry, I was just meaning the 2-3 storey below grade levels at TNS. Is that not for the parkade that we've been discussing or am I confused?

I'm guessing the Carlton Inn site is the future phase (or one of the phases). Right now there is no equipment or anything on that site. Just the construction fencing.

^ No, I was just speculating that a parkade may be next given the growth in the area and the limited capacity for underground parking.

Only Eaton's horse stalls I was aware of was the old red brick building where the CTV parking at Graham and Carlton is now located. After the horses were retired it was converted to managers parking according to a cousin who was an Eaton's manager.

And some documentary I was watching on MTS TV local history video on demand said there was another Eaton's stable by in the area west of Higgins and Main but I don't know where.

There would have been horses in and out of the basement as that was the shipping and receiving for the store and catalog building.

Will Longboat build a parkade at Donald and St. Mary with a BUILD A BEAR at the corner?

Just in case people are unclear - as part of the RFP for Development, TNS has to AT LEAST replace the number of parking spots lost with the development of the surface parking lot. I have been told the included parkade will be 400+ stalls. Whether it is below grade or above grade there will be a parkade the size of the Centre Point parkade.

It could also be a mix of below and above grade parking like 201 Portage or the Fairmont.

The province and its surface parking lots are such a massive hindrance to progress in the downtown.

I can confirm the managers parking as my dad was one who had parking in there. I have clear memories of him telling me about it every time we were in there.

Well I know there were horse stables as Dominion Express at 112 Alexander. The main floor had the wagons, second floor were the horse stalls and third floor for the straw and hay. The remnents are all through this concrete building. Very interesting if one is looking.

^ That would be epic, Winnipeg's new tallest, 100% parking. Takes two hours to exit from the top level after work!

And knowing the people here, you guys would probably drive past the first 37 floors of open parking to park on the top.

Lots of shoring and excavation work continuing on site. Starting to get quite a hole dug on the north east side of the site. You can seethe shoring exposed for maybe one storey down.
