I guess I still need convincing as to why this isn't a good thing. It's going to replace a parking lot, and it's not even a very nice parking lot to begin with. It's right near the Tabernacle, so I can see people leaving shows, not wanting the party to end, and being like "Ah hell yes we are getting on this Ferris wheel right here". There's also been a lot more concerts (really awesome concerts too) in Centennial Park recently, so you'll have people wanting to do things after those shows. It'll also serve the tourist/convention crowd that just want 'something' to do. It's also in a spot where the views will be pretty nice, park on one side, and then a view of the entire peachtree spine to Buckhead. Downtown views are really incredible, I was at the Glenn Hotels rooftop deck recently and it was unbelievabl!
It's also 100% privately funded. If it makes money it'll stick around, if it doesn't they'll remove it. So if it ends up being a good idea it stays, if it ends up being a bad idea it goes away. It seems like a total no brainer to me?

I appreciate your perspective. I think I look at it as a little tacky - it is being 're-used' after a stay in Pensacola. And I think of the incredible London Eye - so beautifully designed and twice as tall. I don't hate it, I just wish it were a little more provocative, unique and perhaps taller.

Don't forget it's stay in Paris prior to Pensacola...although I don't think of recycling as tacky nor do I think that way of beautiful Pensacola.

i'm okay if it doesn't make a significant impact on the skyline. if it's something to do, OK, but having the biggest ferris wheel in the world just to be the best is corny.

This is actually the part that I need convincing of. That parking lot its going in seems like its too close to the core of downtown to really even be able to see it. I definitely don't think you'll be able to see "down the spine" of peachtree st, given that this parking lot is a good 3 blocks west of peachtree.

Unless the damn ferris wheel is taller than the Westin Peachtree, I just dont get how it will have good views of the skyline at all. Thats like saying the Peachtree Center Marta Station has good views of downtown.

Isn't it about the height of a 20 floor building? The views from that area of Fairlie-Poplar won't be obstructed by much of anything if so. This isn't like a carnival ferris wheel...it's much taller.

Finally found a rendering of the wheel. It even shows a streetcar headed back from the park down Luckie St towards Peachtree. The alignment is actually accurate. They must have talked to URS

I hear you. This is a tough crowd. It was in Paris, yet it is somehow beneath Atlanta.

World's biggest roaster?

Hope they factored in Sun rays bouncing off the solar panels in the parking lot next door, It would be unfortunate if the Skywheel becomes a slow turning rotisserie.

Wow, some people are never satisfied. I've ridden the London Eye, and I'm excited to see a Ferris wheel with gondolas here, even if it's not as large. The smaller wheel was a huge hit at the Final Four concerts, and it just looked cool. I wonder if NASCAR feels stupid yet for not putting their Hall of Fame in "oh no dangerous downtown Atlanta" instead of in Uptown Charlotte, where it's a white elephant. I remember the NCers gloating about getting the HOF there, and telling us to "enjoy the fish tank." A few years later and more than a million people have done just that, and even more tourism is coming to downtown. Gotta love it.

Obviously, Paris realized the error of its ways.

Solar panels are designed to ABSORB radiation, not reflect it. That's how they produce energy. The average solar panel has an albedo similar to dry sand or coniferous trees...

To comment on the quality of view discussions;
One of my favorite views of Atlanta's P'tree spine has been from the 19th and 23rd floors of 101 Marietta St. It is offset just enough not to "jumble" the lineage of said spine and you can trace our awesome sky--line as it heads to Buckhead and beyond.
Obviously this is being built a couple blocks away but I can assure you the views will be at least the equivalent and worth the pfennigs.

Thank you!

The comment about panels reflecting light made me truly sad for the state of science education in this country.

Stadium and Related Projects Get State Funding

According to a report in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Georgia Board of Economic Development Thursday approved $30 million in bond financing related to the new Atlanta Falcons stadium and two other (related) projects.

Half of the money will go toward property acquisition associated with the planned $1 billion retractable roof stadium due to become the Falcons’ new home in 2017. Another $11.75 million will be used to buy land to make room for a new road and parking deck to be built for the College Football Hall of Fame.
The third project, planned renovations at Building B of the Georgia World Congress Center, will get $3.25 million in bonds.

For those who misunderstood the visual sense of satire intended in my statement truly make me sad, also. But, then I laugh it off and go back to reading 'I fucking love science'.
