This is 180 ft tall. London Eye is 443 ft.

Maybe I'm being churlish but it doesn't look that impressive. Just seems like you'd notice it and think a carnival was in town.

They've closed down and fenced off the former Days Inn (I think?) off Spring in Downtown for the Aloft conversion!

On the ferris wheel, I don't think it's a big deal to give it a try, and I live and work downtown so I'd see it all the time. It'll just be another thing for tourists to do around here. If it draws interest and makes money it'll stay or be upgraded, if not it'll go away. You guys make it sound like it's some kind of tragedy. If there was some kind of decision to be made, something like should we do a ferris wheel or something else, I'd prob go wth something else, but right now the something else is nothing.

I was more excited about the Aloft until I heard they completely value engineered out most of the exterior portions of the project. I think they're just replacing the EIFS or cleaning it and calling it a day. Obviously it'll be a lot nicer inside, but I was hoping for a bit better looking building. Very disappointing.

You're right, midtown is not little five points. I guess you have to have 2 smoke shops, some scene kids, used clothing stores and a record store to be "cool" though.

Got any ideas? There aren't many things left that haven't been done before...even ideas that people think are unique are usually taken from somewhere.

The observation wheel came from Paris to Pensacola. Does that make it somehow better to the naysayers? I think it will be wildly successful no matter where it came from.

Yes, a space elevator.

Wandering around in Midtown yesterday, the amount of extra foot traffic on Peachtree between 10th and 14th these days is startling, compared with 6 months ago. It's like Intermezzo opening up flipped a switch.

I think Intermezzo is relentlessly overrated personally, but the build-out impressed me once it's in "good weather mode". They have two rows of tables essentially on the street, which is a very European layout (in contrast with a patio separated from the widewalk).

Panera Bread signs are up. I'm not a fan of that place either (picky me!) but it will help that block have some life during the daytime.

Can't wait for 77 12th to open.

Any retail announcements yet for 77 12th? Aside from restaurants?

Interesting layout of South Downtown, showing who owns certain parcels. I expected the MMPT to cover the entire Gulch.

I agree...I like the idea.

Gatlinburg also has a space needle...so I guess Seattle is Gatlinburgized too.

Ferris Wheel

I'd really rather see more apartments built downtown to get more 24 hour street life in place. I think that at some point, you can add the ferris wheel, the Civil Rights Museum, the College Football HOF, and five other big tourist attractions and eventually you get diminishing returns on improving vibrancy and street life unless you get more people to live there.

NFL OKs $200M in stadium financing for Falcons

NFL team owners voted Tuesday to give the Atlanta Falcons $200 million in NFL G-4 stadium financing toward the team’s planned new $1 billion stadium.

“Today’s approval by the NFL team owners is an important milestone in moving the new stadium project forward,” Falcons Owner and Chairman Arthur Blank said in a statement. “The consideration of G-4 financing for new stadiums requires thoughtful analysis on the part of the NFL Finance and Stadium Committees, including compliance requirements that protect the best interests of all owners and the league.
