Well you could have Monctons... Connected to a sobeys, with a sprawling parking lot, I would take that building over a suburban structure built downtown anyday!

Always thought it was a waste that they built the Sobeys on that corner!

I don't see it as out of control, they're trying their best to establish requirements that will create a more vibrant city and more pedestrian-friendly streetscapes. It's not their fault that many of the developers in New Brunswick don't know how to do either of those things, but they do need to do more to educate those developers as to why the requirements exist and enable them to thrive under the system.

Nice conceptual drawing of the new Sobeys Extra, NB Liquor, and Petsmart at East Point Shopping.

Not bad, but for the "high class" look they seem to be going for, the big SOBEYS sign really seems out of place. Maybe if it didn't have the big green block underneath (The "EXTRA" part? ) it would fit in better.

On the other hand the NB Liquor sign is muted almost to nonexistance.

Maybe it's because it's the closest but the Pet Smart sign seems to fit the best. It's obvious enough to be noticeable, while not seeming too Tacky with the rest of the look. The brick motif behind the sign probably helps a lot with the look.

Not much can be done with corporate logos unless you dictate a uniform look for all. Some will always look out of place unfortunately. In Palm Springs they do dictate a particular look and feel.....everything is in an adobe type building and the store names are all the same style and font on the buildings....no logos!

Over many years this department just says no or you can't do that. What they should be doing is working with developers to bring their ideas forward. Help them work within our outdated bylaws. It starts with attitude.

Another Defunct Company it seems I've only found those 11 locations still in operation, and it seems it's been that way for a while. Unless they plan that people will be buying direct off there site.

According to their (dated and ho-hum?) website they have 27 locations.

This is a new Beer Store in Ottawa, for comparison:

I'd love to hear from the city on their requirements for the new union street location. I have heard - but need confirmation - that the city wouldn't allow access from union or Wellington and that's why it looks like it does.

Really? I heard the opposite, at least from the planning department, who wanted to deny the design because it didn't include an entrance [or real windows] from the Union St. side

Interesting - like I said, my source needed confirmation - I'm pretty sure there must be info on this available to the public somewhere!

Walking the fine line between needing to encourage development and allowing suitable development in urbanized areas.

There was in article in the Telegraph-Journal today regarding the new Sobeys Extra @ East Point Shopping. Some key takeaways were;

Will be the second Sobeys Extra in Atlantic Canada, And first in New Brunswick
Store will be opening the end of next month, or early August
Current Sobeys is 45,000 square ft. The new one will be 58,000 sq ft
Current store has 132 employees. New one will have 207
New services at new location will be a full kitchen with certified chef, sushi and noodle bar, tempered chocolate program, and wellbeing counsellor

Looking forward to the opening. The current East Side location was definitely dated, and a bit cramped.

Also - Petsmart looks to be coming along quickly. The steel is already up, and the room almost done. I suspect we will see them open for business the end of September, or beginning of October.

I heard the old birks store has been leased! No info on tenant though but suspect a quality organization.
