^Yep. Although the parking lot might be less of a health hazard given the toxicity of the bird droppings in the buildings. The city and owners should be ashamed of themselves, although we know they aren't.

@ValBradshaw posted this image an hour ago to Twitter taken from 12th and Hamilton. What a huge property. From this angle you can see how big it is/was.

Anyone have any clue who owns it? Were there any requests to try to lose the heritage status or to demolish it? Sad that the city sticks that heritage tag on it, yet allows the owner to neglect it and let it fall apart like that.

Have a hard time believing people think that building was worth saving or getting heritage status at all. It's an ugly brick square building with no architectural significance.

Time to move on.

So, we're likely talking about a small fire by a squatter that got out of control, or arson.

Interesting that the Municipal Heritage designation says "The designation applies specifically to the exterior of the structure," the exterior brick structure looks OK... so maybe the owner will be left holding a brick exterior that remains protected (yes, I realize I'm dreaming in Technicolor, and yes - despite losing a Heritage building, even a parking lot is an improvement over a decrepit pigeon hotel with no hope of restoration).

From what I saw of damage, there is zero chance that any of this will remain. It will need to be bulldozed for safety reasons ASAP. The City probably will not allow a surface parking lot - which is "prohibited" under the downtown plan.

Could be a good location for the new private operator of the Broad St liquor store (Metro Liquor?). Although, I'm working on the assumption they'll want to get away from that stretch of Broad until it improves significantly.

With all the talk about what the building could have been... nobody did it. The building's been available for years. The problem is that there's no money for a happening spot there. Decades away from revitalization.

The city's been aware of the issue for a long time, they're simply limited in what they could do.

The travellers building was in a serious state of disrepair - likely by intent. Windows purposely left open - odd that they were once closed and then all of a sudden they were all open at once. The exterior bricks were in bad need of raking and repointing. I'm surprised that chunks of the bricks facing broad street hadn't already started to fall off on to the sidewalk. And as far as buildings on that block that need to disappear - the liquor store should be no. 1. The liquor store is the main reason for the state of that entire neigboorhood in terms of crime and safety. I realize that some people have addictions but there is no need to pander to them by making liquor stores convenient.

Sadly, simply slapping a heritage designation on a building like this basically seals its fate and leads to this. Until the property tax system either penalizes owners for lack of maintenance or rewards owners for upgrade investments - this is the inevitable outcome.

All the tenders were based on specific locations before hand and no one's going to invest money in a dangerous location.
