Yeah but the Southeast Transitway- you can run 404 buses, 118 connections to Nepean ect- does a better job at that till the Trillium Line actually gets twinned and I really don't think that's gonna happen before 2030.

Sure you can. Just as accessible as any other uOttawa building. During the school year they are quite busy. There are classes there, with the School of Nursing being the main occupant. The old Algonquin gym is used for recreational sports all day long . When the dome is up over the field, it is used from 7am to 11 pm, seven days a week, The Dressing rooms for the dome are in Building A. Also there are the Facilities for the football team ( dressing and equipment room, team meeting room, weight training room, physio and sport medicine rooms, and coaches offices).

What's going on with this competition? Why so little discussion here and in the media? This is such an important plot of land for the city and it's residents. Let's hope they learned a few things from Lebreton 1.0. Oh ya and Go Sens Go! Would LOVE to see a downtown arena in the next decade.

The consortiums that have been selected to draw up bids have been given until the fall I believe to submit proposals that will be narrowed down to two or three and the final result will be announce next year. The reason nobody is talking about it is that the NCC, as part of the bid process, stated that those consortiums who went public with anything could be removed from the competition.

Yes, it is important but not so important to be removed from the competition. The NCCs reasoning is likely convoluted, but probably also to prevent the different consortia getting a step up if one were to release details early.

Process is ongoing but the NCC has muzzled the bidders from speaking to the media, hence there isn't much new to say. of course the citizen will attempt to spin the same info a few more times over the next 8 months. I'm actually surprised we found out as much as we did about the bidders and their strategic partners.

Proposals are due in November of 2015 and they will decide after this so you likely won't hear anything until early 2016?

Will we get to vote, or are they just going to shove it down our throats?

Question Lebreton flats development

I have not heard much about the redevelopment of LeBreton either. I think that they were going to announce the plans in November or maybe January the latest. I did read in the Ottawa Citizen the other day that a LRT is going to pass through Lebreton flats. I did read somewhere that they were planning to build a new library in Lebreton flats because the one in Metcalfe street is small and outdated and it would cost millions of dollars to renovate it. A hockey arena is suppose to go in LeBReton flats. I heard of green space, condo towers, and retail space, but I will have to wait and see, until the final plan comes out.

Vote? That sounds like a silly idea. It will be a throat shoving no matter what. The only vote will come from Pierre Poilievre, unless the Cons get voted out.

NCC targets mid-December for interim LeBreton improvements

Don Butler, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: August 5, 2015 | Last Updated: August 5, 2015 5:19 PM EDT

It’s only a tiny slice of LeBreton Flats, but property south of Wellington Street and the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway near the Booth Street intersection should look a lot more appealing by mid-December.

According to a recent tender posted by the National Capital Commission, work on the LeBreton Flats “interim improvements” will begin as soon as a construction contract has been awarded and must be substantially completed by Dec. 15.

As part of the project, a one-hectare site just east of Booth will become a new park and a small temporary plaza will be added on the west side of Booth to display a reconstructed 19th-century fountain unearthed in 2013 during soil remediation work.

Once completed, the NCC promises that the improvements will greatly improve the “gateway experience” for those using the parkway to enter the downtown core.

Contaminated soil on both sites was removed down to the bedrock and clean fill was imported last fall to prepare the area for landscaping.

The new park will be “a romantic gardenesque-style public green space, with bold and dynamic land forms, symbolizing movement through the landscape,” the NCC says on its website.

It will also help visitors better appreciate Algonquin culture and values through interpretive and public art elements.

The restored granite fountain was erected in 1892 and dedicated to Lilias W. Fleck, wife of Ottawa businessman Alexander Fleck and mother-in-law of Thomas Ahearn, a prominent businessman and inventor who later became the first chairman of the Federal District Commission, a precursor of the NCC.

As well, the NCC will plant a “vegetative edge” between Booth and Preston streets and relocate an existing security fence so that it isn’t visible from the parkway.

The improvements are only temporary and will eventually be displaced by the proposed redevelopment of LeBreton Flats.

Four teams have submitted plans to develop up to 21.6 hectares of the flats. The NCC expects to announce the successful proponent by mid-2016.

Thumbs up New park

I am sure that Lebreton Flats will look far more beautiful, once they add green space. It will look good with a fountain and many green trees. It would not look so scruffy looking.

Agreed. But it also needs people and buildings to make the area more attractive.

Isn't that whole area currently torn up for LRT construction? How are they going to put this in while that's ongoing?

LRT construction is on the south side. This is the moon crater on the North side along SJAM.

Even better questions is how are they going to build a park and plant trees and such in mid-December?

Temporary for now. This city is good at making temporary things permanent, even when it is a mistake.
