Video on hockey arena
Silvia Logan
February 27, 2015

I watched the video on the hockey arena. I think that it should be put in Lebreton flats because it will give that area more life. It is a nuisance having to drive to Kanata, especially in the winter just to go see a hockey game.

In any case, I'm assuming that's what their vision is - something like the Edmonton Arena District.
In Edmonton, I think I prefer 360's version. Seems like a better integration with the city. Rossetti's is too futuristic. All in all, too much going on.

That said, the materials proposed for Rossetti's arena are more my style. I was never a fan of 360's brushed aluminum.

If this isn't an arena district I will be furious. There is no other option in my mind. We need our arena downtown to truly transform the city

I still seriously consider Hurdman to be other contender for a future home for the Sens. Esp. if it can be planned in a way that really brings the area together with enough TOD to densify but doesn't destroy or overpowers the parkland along the Rideau.

Considering that it would be connected to the Southeast Transitway and Confederation Line, the Highway and Riverside Dr. It's arguably a better location for the arena as it could be a catalyst for change that could spread out into Train Yards, Lees/uOttawa and beyond.

Though, those who live in the gated towers will probably NIMBY like hell.

Also, Hurdman Station its self will be a jewel.

I also think the rough area for TOD eliminates to much of the parkland, but that's just IMO.

Considering this is the conceptional vision for Lees:

My point is I'll be interested to see what all the plans are for LeBreton Flats and just hope that in the desire for a downtown arena and fixing the mistakes of the past we don't loose focus on what could also be.

Hopefully, the current buildings at Lees will be demo'd.

In my opinion, they should demolish that old Science Museum in Alta Vista and build a new one in Lebreton flats close to the War museum. I think that they should also construct a first run multiplex cinema in a Lebreton flats, so that we will have one downtown again.

If anything, Hurdman is the best contender for a new arena. I would prefer more cultural institutions at LeBreton to compliment the War Museum while having the E.B. Eddy Lands and Hull as the entertainment balance.

I agree, Hurdman is the best contender for a new arena.
Hurdman is already (and will be) a major public transportation hub.
I wonder why they built their current arena in Kanata, instead of Hurdman.
Quite a bad decision it was.

You're kidding, right? You don't remember starting this thread for this same question 2 years ago?

The Science Museum down Alta Vista should be torn down and be built near the War Museum in a Lebreton flats. One should put an inside and outside concert at Lebreton flats.

I agree however, with the Federal Government investing 80 million in the Alta Vista location, it will not happen in the near future, if ever.

Here is a later version of Lees, recognizing that the university is likely to keep the sports field there. Very unlikely that the current buildings will survive much longer.
They are slated for demolition. Urban Strategies will present their campus master plan to the public on March 10. They are likely to post renderings of what they propose on their web site after march 10.

Buildings on Lees Avenue
Silvia Logan
March 1 2015

What buildings on Lees Avenue near the University of Ottawa are you referring to? Do you by chance have a picture of these buildings which are supposed to be demolished?

There aren't a whole lot of pictures around, but LeadingEdgeBoomer is likely referring to the former Algonquin Lees Campus which currently sits directly north of the uOttawa football field.

Cyril Leeder seems to be really keen on having the arena where the Trillium and Confederation lines meet so people can access it by LRT from the East, West and South. He's repeated this point a few times. Makes sense (although Hurdman has better highway access).

That is them. They were built for Algonquin College during the sixties and seventies, They were done on the cheap. They have no basements!
They are all within a couple of hundred meters of the of the Lees LRT station. Under the LRT TOD plan the City would like to see buildings as high as 30 stories that close to the station. I do not know if the university will build that high. The university intends to build a new Faculty of Health Sciences building as the first project there. The open space across the 417 from the old Lees buildings , nicknamed The Bowl , with the official address of 1 Robinson AvIt isalso in the TOD area and will be part of the university plan as it is now owned by the uni.

TOD Draft Plan Nov2013

Quote:
The “Bowl” Lands (1 Robinson Avenue) are the vacant semi-circular parcel of land bounded by Highway 417 and Lees Avenue. The property is 1.57 hectares. It was used by the City as a snow storage area. Ownership of the land is being transferred from the City to the University of Ottawa.
Rumour has it that they may start construction on the new FHS building in two years.

Former Algonquin College Building
Silvia Logan

Are they going to demolish the former Algonquin college building? Will the new Faculty of Health Sciences go in that place? They have a new football field where the old parking lot was. They built a new parking lot near Lees Avenue bridge.

Are the buildings open to the public? I used to visit when I was younger when my dad taught in that building before his department moved to Woodroffe, and it would be neat to visit it once more. I remember it being really dark.

There are actually five old buildings connected with covered ground level walkways. Yes they will all go. Yes the current plan is to build a FHS there or in the Bowl, (see post above). How the new field and parking lot are affected--well, we will have to wait until detailed plans are released to know that
