Mewata will likely be sold at some point, I would assume when it needs a major renovation the feds don't want to pay for. Maybe then it can be a museum or something.

Post 2000 the federal government did a review of their heritage armouries and consulted with the local users. Most were offered the option of moving to into new modern facilities akin to the Navy Reserve facility. The Calgary based units voiced their support of staying dowtown.

Tiling on the South side is complete, and the North side has just a few spots left. Pano I made...

What's the deal with the unfinished tiles at the NMC...did they just run out of funds? I love walking around EV now and that always sticks out like a sore thumb. Anyone in the know for a timeline on completing that?

They ran out of money (project cost went from $150 million to $190 million) and I believe one of the contractors put a lien on the building.

Yes the project went over budget but that's not the reason why, the tiles they ordered were the wrong size and did not fit. They were due to put the new ones in during the winter but had to delay it until summer because if the brutal weather...

Good to know, thought it was mostly the lien. Look forward to it being finished, the building looks great, but the unfinished parts look terrible.

Has anyone gone and checked out the exhibits?

I think it was more the lien, refusal to pay so refusal to finish.

Nope, it's a logistical reason as mentioned above.

It's a stunning building. We bough a family membership on family day as they were only $60.

It's a really cool place especially with the little ones.

They also do some cool stuff for adults like nights with live DJs.

The acoustics in there are phenomenal

Are the exhibits interesting though? I never went to the original so I have no idea if the collection is as good as it's made out to be. Will definitely have to check out a DJ night, I have friends who spin there on occasion. Do you still DJ?

Yeah I would say that the exhibits are interesting. We have been a few times with the kids so I haven't had a chance to do all the reading about the items that I would like to but there are some really fun rooms. For example, there is one room where you can learn to play songs on the bass, drums, keyboard and guitar (it's really interactive and is taught at a beginner, intermediate and expert level). There are a couple of spots where you can work on sound mixing, a full drum set and piano that you can learn to play on. There are also 2 recording booths where you can sing along to some songs. Also a room full of instruments that you can play. The third level has this amazing renovated organ that they play a couple times a day in weekends.

Honestly, the building is stunning. If you think the exterior looks awesome, the exterior will blow your mind. The acoustics are absolutely phenomenal. For example, the first time we visited we walked in to the amazing sounds of jazz, having never been there before I just thought it was being played through the speakers. We were informed that there was a jazz ensemble playing on the uppermost level of the building but it sounded so amazing.

The place is a jewel, the only thing I would say is that they need to have some sort of alt-exhibition space. I suspect that once you have gone twice you would feel like you have seen everything. So return visitors would drop.

Not DJing too much these days. Wish I had the time to throw down!

Excellent description! I also really liked the video montage to Canadiana music. I don't know how to describe it, but it isn't just a video and it goes on for a long time, but it never loses your interest.

I recommend you look at this again. Drove by the other day and most certainly the south side is not complete.

What I had not noticed the first time was the corners, but what they had finished was a large patch on the South side that had originally been left.

I had an interesting discussion over the weekend with a couple of the guys doing the exterior of the building. Turns out that the majority of the tiles on the building are anchored at 4 points, with the exception of the pieces on the edges that are only anchored at two points on the top edge. There is a bracket that holds them in place and they were experiencing significant cracking. One of the major delays was getting the tiles and brackets re-made.
