I noticed that the lamp posts on the 25th Street extension have been installed. They're a white LED light, and dark-sky compliant. A vast improvement over the yellow acorn floodlights on 25th St from 1st Ave to the bridge.

Does anyone know what's going in at the old Pizza Hut location on 22nd?

And I guess the old Robins Donuts location on Idywyld.. They look like the same building.

They honestly look like the colour of the "Burger Baron's" in Regina.

Cactus Club will add to vibrant downtown Saskatoon scene
Saskatchewan’s first Cactus Club to open doors in late summer

The opening of the trendy Cactus Club Café restaurant later this summer will add to the growing social scene in downtown Saskatoon.

Downtown has seen a significant growth in restaurants, pubs and lounges popping up in the last year, according to Brent Penner, executive director of the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID).

"It's great to see an enterprise such as Cactus Club going in on Idylwyld (Drive) which is kind of the western edge of downtown,” he said.

The Cactus Club, which was originally slated open last year, will open its doors by late summer. The later opening is not considered a “delay” according to, Christy Murphy, director of marketing for the Cactus Club.

“We’ve never built a restaurant in an area that is so cold in terms of when they can actually get into the ground so we haven’t actually had experience doing that,” she said, adding the company has a 25-year history which began with president Richard Jaffray, who started Café Cucamongas in Vancouver in 1986. At the age of 23, he sold the restaurant and opened the first Cactus Club in North Vancouver in 1988.

The casual fine dining establishment is hosting a two-day hiring fair April 24 to 25 for all their Saskatoon location positions, including servers, bartenders, chefs, and managers.

"It's wonderful to see these businesses coming into downtown,” Penner said, pointing to considerable growth on 2nd Avenue near 21st Street. He said the 25th Street extension should create more business opportunities in that area.

"I think it just brings another opportunity to bring people to the area so more things that are there brings different groups of people to downtown or keeps them downtown which is good for business."

This doesn't sound like a shopping mall as some people are expecting. It is going to be a 300,000 square foot 'showroom building' with space for up to 350 display areas for trade opportunities. (Remember: Wal-Mart's new Supercentres are close to 200,000 square feet. Winnipeg's new IKEA is nearly 400,000 square feet).

This sounds something like a permanent trade show, where up to 350 businesses will have booths to showcase their products, talk to potential customers, and perhaps ink some sales.

I still think this is a great thing for Dundurn, Saskatoon, and Saskatchewan as a whole. People will travel to it if it offers a wide range of innovative, unique, and quality products, just as people come from around the globe for Agribition and the Farm Progress shows.
I just hope there will be more to this project than this.

That's the entire point. They are hoping that buyers would rather fly to Saskatoon and drive to Dundurn, then fly around the world to China. Buyers can see samples and negotiate prices etc all without leaving North America. For us regular folk, it's like buying factory direct. It won't be a mall with clothing stores and a food court etc. Their big business is the bulk sales, the direct to customer stuff is just a little extra cash coming in.

It's been reported on here before that another group, Radiance Cohousing, is looking to build Saskatoon's second cohousing development. Their website reports that they have a site at 18th St and Avenue L South (opposite Optimist Park), and not far from Wolf Willow Cohousing. Here's a rendering from their website:

The thing is, if it were such a good idea, then why setup in the middle of nowhere? It is not like there is unlimited world market for a wholesale showroom center, what is to stop a rival developer from saying, ok let's build something just like Brightenview's except lets put it in Nevada on the outskirts of Vegas where we know it will be cheap and easy to attract both buyers and sellers any given day. Who on earth would pick Dundurn over Vegas to make a deal (and pay vastly more to get there).

Why does Edmonton have the biggest mall in the world? It's not like 30 years ago people were flocking to Edmonton to shop and had nowhere to do it so they built a gigantic mall. Or to your point, why does Vegas exist at all, couldn't they have done the same thing in Phoenix?

Don't get me wrong I think this is a crapshoot of an idea and think that it has very little chance of success. However I think too many people are picturing the West Edmonton Mall located in Dundurn and it won't be that if it does come to fruition. It really sounds more like a way to get Chinese people to move to Saskatchewan and take advantage of some immingration loopholes.

I have not made a comparison to WEM once, because there is all kinds of local demand everywhere for consumer retail to justify large shopping malls in every city, they (Ghermezians) just decided to try building one on the Canadian prairies modelled after Mall of America that would be enough of an attraction to make the expense feasible (barely).

With the Dundurn Sales Centre, I don't see how it can possible be more feasible here than anywhere else. I think if they spend money to start building it here, there is potential benefit to local contractors, but at what cost? I simply foresee some earth turned, a whole bunch of foreign investors duped into thinking Dundurn is a much more metropolitan place than it really is and a bunch of wealthy foreigners left with an even more bleak image of this place before this concept was hashed.

I never implied you said it was WEM, I said too many people are picturing that.

I think we can both agree that this is a dumb idea from a business perspective in how we see things. Makes way more sense to put it somewhere with a major international airport with multiple easy connections throughout North America. However if this isn't being created to make money, but instead being created to allow for a group of wealthy Chinese citizens to immigrate to Canada easier then it doesn't have to make business sense as long as it gets them in the door. I don't know if that is the case or not, but it seems like it because as we've both now mentioned there is no business reason to put anything in Dundurn when there are probably hundreds or thousands of more suitable locations throughout North America.
