We went to a songwriters' circle early this evening, a fundraiser for local foodsharing. It was ~*~spectacular~*~. A half dozen of my favourite local artists/instrumentalists.
They had Phil Churchill from The Once (my fave band) hosting, Juno award winners Amelia Curran (my fave singer) and Duane Andrews (not just my fave, but probably objectively one of the best living guitar players), Mark Bragg (still one of the best concerts I've ever been to), Gordon Quinton (the sweetest. He writes songs that replicate the sounds he hears in nature - but just melodic enough to not be annoying. The crowd literally AWW'D aloud at his heartfelt smile to their big ovation), Kat McLevey (she may have a Juno also, I don't know - but she's going to Berkeley now), Brianna Gosse (I think she'll be the next big thing nationally from here), and Aaron Collis (mostly from the Dardanelles, but he's basically the go-to button accordion guy on the island and has the most beautiful eyes you'll ever see.)
ALL in one intimate room, on stage, for THREE HOURS. Yes ma'am.
(I realized tonight that the economy has been so bad, for so long, that I relate the city to that shopping cart or old car again. lol It'll be the 90s all over again. I'm half expecting a CHEVETTE dealership to open up. That was gone from my feeling about the city for many years, except jokingly.)

Quinton and Duane's duet, a blend of local jigs and reels demonstrating the common root (and even terms) between Baroque and the type of Celtic music that became Newfoundland folk, was especially good. It's apparently going to be part of a movie soundtrack, I think he said. I'm snapping up that CD as soon as its ready. One of Brianna's songs about writer's block and writing about her boring life was cute too.
