The place closes at 8:30 so my wife tried going at 8:15pm to try and catch it at a dead time... Nope. Two massive lineups all the way to the produce section. She was there till 9:00 trying to get out. I wonder how much overtime they pay there, or if they schedule the people past closing specifically because they know they're never going to close on time?

The latest I've heard is that if Costco were to do anything in Regina, they would sell there current location and build new east of the city near White City/Emerald Park. The reason being that over 60% of their customers are from out of town so the move out wouldn't cost them much business.

Nothing for sure, just a rumour I heard from someone I know that works there.

The rumour I've heard from several Costco employees is for a second store in Regina ahead of Saskatoon.

I wouldn't put the move out of the question, but I would question the 60% figure. That seems really really high. There are thousands of people in there every single day, and I don't think the majority are from outside of Regina.

Nothing up on Costco's website, nor on the typically well-informed rumour sites.

Closest is this from June 2013 "Selected communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan will also be considered."

This came at the same time Costco announced plans to open 150 new stores worldwide by the end of 2018. 55 of these are planned for the US, 25 for Canada.

Guelph is the only Canadian location currently slated to open in 2014.

Let's hope that if they do build a new Costco (in the north) that construction on Pasqua Street will be done by then!

I usually go to Costco in Regina on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning and usually it's very quiet then.

Water leak caused a sink hole at Victoria and Broad today. Some real construction needed there. Detour while they fix it. Question is, does the city need to invest some time on inspecting roads. Vic near Arcola has had a couple of those the last few years as well.

I heard from 2 friends today that work (or their spouse) at Costco, and they said there is no second location planned. Instead, they are moving a bit further east to around Superstore, and will be a larger location.

Where would a larger store fit? I don't think there are any open space (of the necessary size) west of the cemetary/south of Vic/North of Haughton... which would leave some of the farmland north of Vic (Dewdney/Eastgate area) or south of Vic between Tower Road & the cemetary. Not sure these are ideal for a few reasons.

Wasn't their going to be an Ikea back when in the old Superstore location and Pat Fiacco prematurely mentioned it in a state of the city address before the announcement was to take place and then they backed out?

LOL - the Regina IKEA pink elephant.

The urban legend has been bouncing around Regina since IKEA opening its first Canadian store in 1976, then again in 1980s when they started a Canadian expansion push, then again when Superstore vacated the downtown location... I'll believe it when I see a shovel in the ground

The 2 million threshold within 40-60miles obviously isn't used in Canada - Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, etc wouldn't have stores - but it gives an indication of IKEA's criteria. 1 million metro, and 2 million market area seems a better rule of thumb for Canada. Although Winnipeg doesn't have a million within 40-60/miles, AB+SK+MB has about 5.9million people & 3 IKEAs... approx 1store:2million people.

If that is the plan, it's almost as if the East end is going through the downtown/suburb doughnut phenomenon itself.

Putting Costco right beside the East bypass would make access better from other areas of the city. It also depends if they would want to be seen by travellers bypassing the city that may need to stop for something.

Does anyone know how close the Moose Jaw CA is to be absorbed into the Regina CMA? I know you need a 35% workforce crossover, but the number has got to be approaching that with the GTH.

The CA and CMA border each other. It's an inevitability.

^Doubtful that would happen anytime soon.

Star Phoenix story on commuting says about a 1,000 (base on statistics Canada numbers) make the commute from Moose Jaw to Regina. If we estimate a workforce in a city of 30,000 to be about 12,000, we'd still need an almost four-fold incresae for that to happen.
