What's wrong with it? It's not spectacular but there's nothing wrong with it. The columns are nice. It's painted GT yellow. The pedestrian walk-across experience is nice with that wavy shade thing over the ample sidewalk. It's way above average for an overpass.

Thats a shame, but to be perfectly honest I never liked that design and I thought the location wasn't ideal. The design seemed to be one of those designs that would look very dated in about 20 years. I would have favored a more traditional design that would stand the test of time. JMHO

I would like to see potted, irrigated trees planted on it. It would make a HUGE difference.

true.

i'd love to see potted, irrigated trees toward the edge of the sidewalk.

i think the canopy should be enveloped by climbing, flowering vegetation every 50 feet or so. drop in irrigated pots running the length of the metal canopy, plug in wisteria and in a few years the bridge might look really friendly.

as is, it's just so friggin beastly, stark and overwhelming (and yet, completely underwhelming).

Initially Calatrava was going to design the 17th street bridge. However I believe GDOT said they could build one just as nice. Trees would at least help it immensely, as would fixing the crossing on the south side of 17th at Spring (with the double turn lanes where they painted out the bike lane) so that it is not so harrowing for pedestrians. I don't think it will help when they open up the off ramp either, unless there is extended pedestrian signalization, which I doubt.

I never saw this posted here.

They decided on the design for the Civil Rights Museum.

I agree, a vine could be a nice touch. Though I would go with something other than wisteria.

I'm still upset they didn't put in hanging structural soil containers on the bridge. Oh, well.

Does anyone have a rendering of the Caltrava bridge? Was on released?

i cant wait for the civil rights museum, the central library, the new symphony center (which im sure would be glamorous), and 1400 peachtree (im sure it is going to be great) to be built. just a few more projects to make atlanta look more like a real global city, as viewed from a global stage.

I am not sure that one was ever released.

Art thou talking of Russell Parkway? It makes getting back to my parents house off 96 much easier

West Midtown

Have yall checked out West Midtown recently? If not, I definitely recommend it. It has gotten mention on this thread but I think, overall, it has had somewhat of a silent transformation into one of the most distinct areas of the city. Starting at the Waterworks, looking at White Provisions (One of my favorite things to happen to the cite in years!!!! Seriously... go check it out if you havent seen it, and stop by West Egg for a bite to eat while you're at it ) then moving to the 1000 marietta street address where the new brickworks is... aside from the new construction a lot of one-story retail has been popping up out of renovated buildings and it is just stunning. A new ~8-story what i believe to be a condo tower has popped up and fits in very nicely with this area.
Every time i go to this area, something new is happening... a lot of small things I wont bother mentioning, but go check it out for yourself!!
it's one of those areas of Atlanta that actually has its own style and I love it.
So, definitely go check it out and support that area... I'd love to see it prosper and grow.

Yes Mayhem we did already see this an discussed it in your absence. This is a huge addition to the area. Only a stones throw from your shop, which I can say never seems to be open. I bike by daily and am only greeted with fliers and a locked door. I would like some shop talk and maybe a new record or two. But I guess I can be satisfied with your replacement NYCLife2005....as soon as he is out of forumjail.

I agree...something always new to see. I just went to Five Seasons Brewing which recently opened in that area.....although the interior of the restaurant still needs some furnishing (really bad chairs).....the rooftop bar has an incredible view of the skyline.
Also, it appears from the website that Palomar has a kickass rooftop bar.

maybe it's me, but i've yet to see nor expect to see much ped traffic there in the foreseeable future. even with some of the planned infill on the east side of the bridge around spring/w.pchtree/etc., not sure i see much ped use pattern outside of an occasional lunchtime pack or two or any significant volume at any time. seems like it'll predominately be a park and walk destination. not passing judgment per se either way...guess that model makes sense given the reality on the ground here...but the ped component of that bridge is always strikingly barren.

1400 Peachtree

Does someone have an idea of about how tall 1400 Peachtree will be?

If anyone is planning on doing some photography any time soon, you should definitely check out the Crescent St. side of 1010 Midtown. They are coming along with the restaurants, and it looks awesome.

Anyone know what's up with the protesters?

For the past few days, a herd of protesters has been marching out in in front of ViewPoint in Midtown. I seem to recall seeing them around the Georgia Tech campus a few months ago, and then over at Plaza Midtown too.

They seem to be mad at the developers for some reason...anyway, I thought someone here might know what the deal was.

Mods, if this post should go somewhere else, please let me know. Thanks.

Actually, I beg to differ. Personally, I am shocked to see the minute foot traffic that we have now given there are very few (1280West) condos on that side of Midtown and very few reasons for individuals to walk from AS to that side of Midtown. I've walked from the Arts Station to AS on a hot summer day and it was not as bad as you think it'd be. Now, imagine when things begin to fill up on either side of that bridge (whether it be 5yrs or 50 from now, more optimistic and hoping next 2-5yrs) people will be pouring in from Midtown into Atlantic Station. Whether it's too "one race" or not, Atlantic Station offers the only consolidated area of retail/restaurant and movie theater in the entire Midtown/Downtown area so people WILL walk from Midtown across the VERY wide and welcoming bridge (which I think is just fine-yes, some flora would be nice but I imagine that's what the grated fence is for in the future) into Atlantic Station. If the Met Center continues with their development at Spring & 17th, tons of employees will be trekking that "ugly bridge" DAILY to have lunch in AS and maybe grab a dress or top to go out after work in AS. Also, I imagine all of the condos planned for that N. Midtown area will house at least a handful of Wachovia, Dillards, & whatever else that may fill those gigantic and welcoming holes.
