Sensitive topic when younger brother inspires older brother. Lots of Vancouver developers sometimes with Vancouver architects have built towers in Toronto. Nothing wrong with that either.

Metro-One was mostly referring to another thread, the "is there a housing bubble at the moment" thread. You can notice that in his rants in this thread (the Skyline thread) he brings me up a few times though I haven't been posting at all in this thread (not even checking it out, actually) for a while as I'm not that interested in skyline pics in the first place... so, obviously, what ticked him off happened somewhere else.

FWIW, I personally don't think there was much drama over there, the drama was IMO mostly in the head of a tiny handful of BC SSPers. Now back to skylines for you guys.

Thank you for the background. Wikipedia is a bit conflicting on how busy this bridge really is and makes claims without any references, but it seems to deal with a lot of traffic (most of which must be local commuting traffic).

Good to hear that they will be tolling it. Our local media was spinning the story quite differently and calling it a purely local bridge since it is not even part of Trans-Canada Highway. Something similar to our George Massey Tunnel between Vancouver and Seattle, which has not been securing federal money despite being a severe earthquake risk.

Anyways, the new bridge looks very good and having it ready by 2018 sounds very fast!

Think Concord Pacific.

I suggest that you take your sarcasm radar for repair and ask them to check why it fails to interpret winking smilies properly. Here's one for an post-repair test:

I don't remember hearing much about other cities' waterfronts, so Vancouver seems clearly be setting an example on what great waterfront development looks like.

And let's not forget that there are also other things Vancouver has inspired - even its own style of city planning, Vancouverism. I think that is a pretty remarkable feat for a small city. Vancouver being so well-known around the world is pretty amazing as well, so we are clearly doing many things right.

The comment about Toronto taking a cue was of course just a small tease that did not warrant the attention that followed. Knowing this forum I am not surprised that it did, but it was unwarranted and thus pretty hilarious.

Well, there must be something to it when so many people want to live here even despite the crazy housing prices...

Wow are you ever insular.

Cityplace was built by Concord Adex which is a subsidiary of Concord Pacific. The architects are Page+Steele, architectsAlliance, KPMB, KPF, Raw Design, HOK. The original masterplanning was done by IBI Group so there's your Vancouver connection. I can't remember if they did the revised built version.

Yeah I get It. Make an insidious comment with a smug little smilie and get off the hook. No one buys that shit.

Personally I'd prefer not to think of Concord.

Concord is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's a scapegoat for everything wrong with the condo boom.

I don't see the significance of a master planned community whether it's on the waterfront or in the middle of a desert. Both Toronto and Vancouver have a rich history of planning and development with many accolades and international attention. Vancourism, St Lawrence Neighbourhood, Don Mills, etc. There's really only a handful of companies in Canada working on these large communities which is why these developments whether in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, etc. all look the same.

I think it's more of a case of lowest common denominator. Portland's Pearl District looks very much like Yaletown, and a lot of Seattle developments look Vancouverish or Torontoish. Pick a city. I was looking at a redevelopment in Buenos Aires recently, and what do you know, it looks like Yaletown. I don't think there's any particular style developers aspire to, their main priority is to build at the lowest cost possible. To market something as "Vancouverism" is a way of putting lipstick on a pig.

Gotta say I like the Vancouver skyline better without the mountains in the background.

In general the architecture along the north shore of the peninsula (as seen in the picture above) is far more varied and of higher quality than the south shore. The south shore though will be improving quite a bit over the coming few years.
