There was also an outdoor/camping style equipment store from the UK that would be new to the Winnipeg market. Sorry can't recall the name.

It opened last fall - Mountain Warehouse.

Been into the Mountain Warehouse a couple times to browse. Seemed like a decent store with good selection.

I wouldn't mind if Sears in GC got replaced with something better. Popped in there not too long ago and it's just random stuff everywhere. If they don't care about that store then they should save some money and close it, and they do need to save some money!

They should build a better movie theater at that end of the mall.

I thought that Sears actually owned their GC location. With all their transactions though who really knows. KP mall as a whole had Sears as something like 1/3 owner and it really benefited when they sold their share, the whole Target train wreck aside.

In terms of GC, the chance of it getting a new movie theater is near zero. Simply put it is between Polo Park and KP movie theaters and like most things that makes the area in the radius of both those locations. If Cineplex, aka the only major movie theater player in Canada, was to invest in a new theater in Winnipeg I would suspect a rebuild/net new at KP would be top of their list the with the long rumored Unicity area coming in a distant second.

There's a movie theatre just down the street from GC. Cinema City or whatever its called now. Kildonan Place theatre was great about 20 years ago. Now in need of major overhaul. They don't even open the box office at the front anymore.

I agree that the KP theatres are in dire need of an overhaul, but I was just at a movie at Silver City St Vital and their box office wasn't open either. Everyone just uses the digital kiosks.

That's the way things are going now. Kiosks. McDonalds, for example, is on that path as well.

Even before the kiosk days at KP, you would have to go up the stairs and purchase tickets in the concessions area. I don't think they even post the movies up on the billboard out front anymore. Its in the old kiosk. Used to really like going there as a kid, play some pinball.

Cineplex is heavily investing into rolling out their RecRoom concepts that play to the entertainment space but not movies. I have seen the old stadium side mentioned as a possible Winnipeg location but its likely 12+ months out still.

In terms of KP theaters, the place is just starting to have a bit of a dated and worn feel. The lobby isn't to current standards and there is little that can be done to easily overhaul it. The challenge is doing a St Vital style rebuild or even closing down and moving outside the mall both seem like they have limited possibility of happening. I mostly raised it in response to the suggestion Cineplex replace Sears at GC.

That does raise an interesting possibility I failed to considered. Cineplex could do a reno of the Northgate Cinema City and turn it into a first run theater similar to what happened on McGillvary.

--

Separately I am coming across reports today that H&M plans to significantly slow expansion going forward to instead focus on its online efforts. Sounds like KP might have just go their store in under the wire on that one. It would seem to put St Vital on the back burner for an H&M store. Perhaps instead they should be working on securing the first to market Zara/Zara Home.

Cinema City is a low cost second run / Bollywood theatre. Not exactly competition for what is being suggested for GC.

I know about the Cinema City at Northgate. That's why I said to build a "better movie theater".

It has been a while since I was at Cinema City Northgate but from memory the auditoriums were decently sized and workable. The lobby was a little small compared to current standards but was effectively open on the north side making an expansion possible. Being that the theater dates back to before Cineplex owned the chain it could make sense to overhaul that into a first run theater removing the second run chain from Cineplex.

If Cineplex continues to operate Cinema City at Northgate as a second run house it further sinks any possibility of a first run complex near GC as the two would heavily cannibalize each other. It is also likely worth mentioning the the old GC theater operated as effectively a second run theater for a period of time under Famous Players before the merger with Cineplex.

Yes people could go to KP or Polo for movies and shopping but why. Nowadays people would rather buy online than go to the store because it's more convenient, so why would they want to take a 20-25 minute drive from Garden City when stores could be conveniently located close to home.

Exactly! As shopping moves online there will be fewer physical stores and people will need to travel further to get to them. This is exactly why Garden City as a retail area is mostly a thing of the past.

See it's a catch 22 for me with online shopping. I usually like to look at something, feel it, touch it, before I buy. So you need a physical store to do that. Then if I can find it cheaper online, way cheaper not save $2, I'll buy it online.

Even electronics. I like to go into the store, talk to someone who hopefully knows a bit about the products, see the TV function for example, then make a decision. Online shopping would be mostly price oriented for me. If I can get a good price, then okay maybe. But I've never ordered a TV online and not sure if I trust the UPS, FedEx whomever with shipping a TV.

Also someone doing an "unpacking" video and/or a demonstration/review video of the product on YouTube is another way of learning about a product and whether it's going to work for ya.
