And what's up with New Brisavoine saying Mexican cuisine is "not super sophisticated"?? It's very sophisticated; it has complex multilayered flavors, and complex preparation techniques. It's even on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. And chili sauce? Does he mean salsa?

And what's this about not being able to get good authentic Chinese food in North America? New Brisavoine has obviously never been to the San Gabriel Valley!

Polite reminder, London's foreign born for its US style metro area would be anything up to 6.1m (2021 census).

For the European style metro area (the London Metropolitan Area) it would be 4.4m

For the Functional Urban Area 4.1m

I would imagine more today given the census was measured during a lockdown, and record migration happened after (near 1m a year).

I annot wait to visit in two weeks. I think I will do high (Topolobampo) and low (hmmmm...so many choices).

Another city with a surprisingly high number of people of Mexican origin is Kansas City. I think it is like 10% or 11%

Yeah, yeah. I've seen these sorts of conversations many times on online forums. You pick any country in the world, and you always have people telling you this country has great and varied cuisine, bla bla bla.

I'm talking about the everyday experience, not some fancy restaurants in the Western world. You really think Mexicans eat the things you posted on an everyday basis?

The French statistical office only reports about the immigrants (unlike the British statistical office and the US Census Bureau who do not distinguish between immigrants and non-immigrant foreign-born). The French statistical office is not interested in the French people born abroad (of whom we have many due to our former colonial empire).

Was it Steely that stated KC has a substantial Mexican population initially from it being a huge railroad junction for USA and the stockyards, related industries.

The population you cite for the Toronto FUA reads as roughly the same as The City of Toronto proper.

But the foreign born statistic in Toronto is much higher than that, in the range of 51-53%

These appear to be largely working class suburbs or very upscale suburbs, Miami is the only large US city that is majority immigrant and San Jose are the only large US city in the 40-49.9% range. Fremont, CA is the most affluent immigrant-majority city in the US.

The worst food I ever had was a mexican restaurant in Groningen (not my choice, was at a conference and a bunch of the Europeans thought that would be a good idea for some reason). That said, Dutch food in general is nothing to write home about...

One of the most interesting meals I had was Thai restaurant in Kangerlussuaq (no longer around, as far as I can tell). Musk Ox Curry.

They're the "San Jose" of the Seattle area, though located more like Oakland rather than Tacoma and with less annexation.

That must have been someone else.

But railroads and stockyards were two of the primary reasons why mexican immigrants first started coming to chicago in the early 20th century, so perhaps the same thing played out in KC?

Either way, KC is one of the most Latino cities in the midwest/rustbelt. And I would imagine that is largely due to mexicans, as it is for most places west of Ohio (where Puerto Ricans begin to predominate).

Though it should be pointed out that all of the cities below, other than Chicago, fall well below the national Latino share of 18%. Chicago is a true outlier in the region in this regard.

The Central Valley is flat and has fertile soil. It's hot, dry, with little frost risk, but depends on massive human intervention and aquifer depletion. The status quo is unsustainable long term.

Now, respectfully, you cited a population of 3.09 million for the FUA, this aligns almost exactly with the population of the City of Toronto proper.

If you have a map showing the FUA covering a different area, that's fine, but there's virtually no way to construct that number with any other administrative units in the Toronto area. .

The point of this, of course, was not to tick you off, but to use the census statistics for Toronto for the foreign born which I linked to.
