^Hmmm I had no idea they'd be demolishing that wall. Will they clean up the stone and reinstall it?

Seems they are leaving the brick up, and going to clean it, they just demolished the back portion.

this is pretty much exactly how I saw it yesterday - assuming they needed the steel reinforcement due to the addition of floors - it's crazy to see the old thick rafters - almost looks like there may have been fire damage at some point.. pretty excited to see this all come to fruition - it's basically just a shell at this point.

Perhaps they've had to be more careful with the new structure given the older parts being retained (and the common wall with the neighbouring building)

But if it merely indicates they're going for quality over speed, I'm all for that!

I was actually thinking, this building would actually look better with a modern glass wall on this portion since the entire building was essentially reconstructed anyway rather than the recreation of sorts they have planned.

Also, I know this is the pandemic, but if these roads all being closed doesn't show Hamilton's overbuilt road Network, I don't know what will...

Eh, I'd rather see road closures or reductions with more space given to pedestrians and cyclists. It's crazy that Hamilton has such criminally thing sidewalks in 2021.

Here's a bold idea I've had for a while - once the LRT is built, woonerf King Street. From Wellington to James, pedestrianise the entire strip. You can expand the park, encourage patio space, hell you could even put in a bikeway in one of the former lanes.

Maybe in 30 years. Good luck getting anyone to sign on to that lol. My hope is that once LRT is built, King Street in the current plans at least becomes essentially useless to cars beyond a few blocks trips, meaning Main will be made into a two way, and King will be redone with 10 years after completing to make the curbs less intense so that it essentially becomes a woonerf.

That and Catherine street is clearly overbuilt and should be a two way street with wider sidewalks. There's no reason for Catherine to be a 3 lane one way.

I don't mind it if they don't go any higher.

The single-floor building with the "Money Direct" loan-shark operation on the opposite corner, however

...I've always hated that. I seem to recall it replaced a 3 or 4 storey building that burned down in the 1980s. At least it's been made a bit more attractive, and 3/4 of it used for good purpose today.

Way back when that whole row of 1-floor buildings used to be a few things, namely the Palace Theatre. Not the only theatre on this side of King St, but it did have a particularly tall marquee. It's probably the place you remember burning down in the 80's.

See I'd prefer if they went like 90 -130 floors here. It's the perfect location right near LRT and central city. Could maybe even handled 200 floors. Right on the Gore. Would revitalize the area.
